Cross platform/OS video glitch.
 

I've been creating videos at home, for church. My editing rig is a Windows PC, with Sony Vegas. Once I've created the video, it looks great at home, but once it's in Pro Presenter on the Mac, there are very subtle glitches in parts of the video. The glitches seem to appear on some of the different effects/layers, which is odd, considering that by the time the video reaches the Mac, it's been rendered as a single track, once or twice.

I genereally render from Vegas 9 as an Mpeg2 - HDV 720-29p. The Mac requires an MP4, for playback, so I then take that file into Vegas 13 and render to MP4, from there. (long story, but Vegas 13 runs like crap on my machine, so it's really only good for rendering to some of the newer formats.)

Any ideas?

Yes!

You can cut out the middleman by rendering directly to MP4 in Vegas 9. Use the MainConcept AVC/MP4 format, and check out the presets. Post in the Vegas forum if you need help with those settings.

You can render to Quicktime in V9, using the Animation codec. This is lossless; it will create huge files, which you can then render to MP4 on the Mac.

You can render to (some mastering format) in Vegas 9, then use the freeware Handbrake to render a *very* nice MP4 using the best MP4 codec going, x264.

Some mastering format... Do avoid MP2/HDV as an intermediate format; it's really a capture codec, and doesn't hold up well through generations when you're trying to get to MP4. Sony's own mastering format is MXF. Microsoft's is AVI-Uncompressed. The only Apple mastering format we can access when encoding in Windows is QT-Uncompressed.

And do consider asking any followup questions in the Vegas forum... there's also some great info there if you search on "Handbrake".

Many thanks for your reply... I'll give it a go, this week... the only problem being, I usually edit from home and upload the video to the Mac, so it's ideal for me to not send the uncompressed version. It might not be an issue, though. As for the MP4, maybe I overlooked something, but it seemed like I couldn't get a 1280 x 720 MP4 render, in Vegas 9.

There may not be a preset for it, but if you click on the "custom" button (or something like that, I'm not in front of Vegas), you can set up your own rendering preset. You can then save it, it will appear in the list with other presets.

Hey, just letting you know, your suggestions worked, just fine. I'm not sure why I thought I couldn't render a 1280 x 720 mp4, in vegas 9, but it does so, just fine. The videos are now glitch free. It's also very helpful to know the nature of the MPEG format.
