GS400 or VX1000
 

I am in need of a new cam right now and I cant decide what cam that I want to get. I just wanted to know what cam would produce a clearer image between the vx1000 and gs400 and which cam has more effective pixels. Thanks

I don't know which one has the most pixels, but pixels aren't that important either in a video camera.

For what do you want to use it?
The VX1000 is a very old camera, especially when you compare it with a GS400.
But its chips are a little bit bigger.
If you want to do narrative work, films, you maybe better look at the pannys, because they will give you a faster filmlook then the sonys.
What's your budget?

The GS400 has higher resolution, although smaller, CCD's. It is capable of producing real 16:9 which is something that the VX-1000, VX-2000 and VX-2100 can't do.

Of course there might be other reasons to choose the VX-1000, but it's getting really old and might have a limited lifespan.

The reason why resolution and pixels are so important to me is because I need a cam that will produce a crystal clear image without artifacts. I got rid of my gl1 because the image was below mediocre and it produced too many artifacts.

Depending on your expectations, you may be searching in vain. I did some test shots awhile ago to explore the level of detail in a wide shot with two different DV cameras. I used the PDX-10 which has three 1/4.7" CCD's with the same resolution as the GS-400. I compared these to the same scene shot by a VX-2000 which has larger but lower resolution chips. As a point of reference, I also took shots with a 5MP Nikon digital camera and downsampled them to 720x480 resolultion then compressed them with the DV codec.

GS400 hands down. Great manual controls. Superb picture manipulation and adjustment. Amazing color reproduction. Real 16x9. Very compact. Best frame mode available, IMHO. The VX1000 is a good camera, but it's kind of a dinosaur.
