I'll let others who know much more than me comment on the "how".

I'll, instead, comment on the "wow".

Killer piece. I like the whole thing. It has a style, and a good flow. The lighting was exceptional, and the post production was obviously big time.

Thanks for posting it!

Can't view it on my Mac, unfortunately.

Sorry I forgot about the MACians...

Hi Ryan,

I'm one of those types that refuses to even load Real Audio into my computer. So looks like I'm out of luck until the Mac version of Media Player is updated to take care of all the bugs that have cropped up recently. Used to be that I could view any Windows Media file...but those were the old days.

I'll see if I can check out the links at my office computer.

Sorry I wish they had a mov.

I've got Real Media and it still doesn't work. Their site says I need to use Internet Explorer 5xx or better. I'm using 5.2.2, which is the latest for Mac. Their site just isn't Mac friendly.

To me it looks like it was mostly colour correction, lots of blues and greens.

Ken Tanaka January 5th, 2003 12:13 AM

I took a look at it from my Dell notebook. It looks to me like most of the video's "look" was achieved in post-production rather than in production. The visual effects seem to be all animations or composites of one kind or another. I think that the dark visual appearance of the live footage was done with a variety of color correction techniques, with gamma manipulation seeming to be the lead effect.

Just my guesses. It's very hard to tell much else from viewing that version.

Effects / Filters

After a couple of views, it almost looks like solarization or posterization effects. But, how did they keep the skin tones from being affected? Maybe only the dark colors are affected by the values of these supposed effects. Pay close attention to any reflective surfaces like the guitar faces and you can see the grain of the supposed effects stated above. Who knows?

Ryan Jaeger January 5th, 2003 01:10 AM

Thats what i thought, BUT the skin tones are what got me confused...

Maby they edited frame by frame?

Tim Joseph January 9th, 2003 06:47 PM

probably lit the background with the filters instead of putting it on the camera. Might have lit them with something too. Its a great look. One I'd love to use someday. I love how everyone has a different theory and none of us could be right. Thats why I love this business!! Hundreds of ways to do one thing!

Rick Spilman January 9th, 2003 06:56 PM

I agree. Almost always easier to use lighting & gels than filters or mess with it in post.

Adrian Seah January 9th, 2003 07:19 PM

Hmmm... unless you know otherwise, I think it was shot with film. This is because of the slo-mo on a number of shots, video just cannot be slowed down like that, and still remain sharp. Unless of course they got a variable frame rate HD cam. In any case, film is more likely.

Just my opinion
