Best place for MiniDV/DV cams in UK?
 

Can anyone suggest a reputable and not overpriced place to buy MiniDV/DV camcorders online in the UK?

Alternatively, are there any high street/specialist shops in the UK that anyone has bought from and has positive reports of (in the Central or North of England if possible)?

I am specifically interested in the Canon XL1s.

Try Jessops they have over 200 stores around the country and you can purchase online URL http://www.jessops.com so there should be one close to you.

Even though it is a general item we do not carry in store, they can be easily ordered in for you to have a look at (generally from warehouse 3 days, from any other Jessops store 1 week from Canon a couple of weeks).

If you do not want to buy new then try second hand URL http://www.jessops.com/secondhand/, thats how I got my XL1 and it comes with a full 1 year warrenty. If you look now there are 3 XL1s listed on the site.

The company can also price match.

So you mean that they will sell me the XL1s new for £2399.99 as I have seen on www.askdirect.co.uk instead of the £2999.99 as quoted on their website?

I can not guarantee it but it is there policy. anumber of rules are applied:

As long as www.askdirect.co.uk have it in stock when you want to purchase the product from Jessops.

I would suggest that you see the product in the flesh, instore, and bring a print out of the site with phone number on so that they can do a quick phone call to double check the facts, but generally it should be OK, worth giving it a try!!!

I will probably do that when I eventually get one, there is a Jessops quite close to where I live and it beats travelling to London.
However, if they wont price match I think maybe I will save my £600 and go to London.

Do you get Computer Video magazine? It has a review on the XL1 which might be of interest to you. If you don't you can get it from WH Smith's.

No I dont get that magazine at the moment, I will pick up a copy next time Im around a WH Smiths.

Is there any good reason why ASK (URL above) and some other retailers can sell the camera for £2350 whereas others, specifically more known retailers (Tesco (not that I would buy a £3000 cam off them), Dabs and Jessops for example) charge around £3000?

I think its because Tescos, DAP and Jessops are very large organisations, so they have much more overheads and don't sell much of the Camera.

Why are Tescos selling High End Camcorders?

Where as Ask direct only has two stores based in central London on the main high streets, Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street, which are very competitive and so drive the prices down.

Anybody else know why this is?
