NTSC signal on PAL TV?

Do pal television sets in Europe accept and transmit the signal from an ntsc camera?

Jeff Donald February 7th, 2003 04:12 PM

Some TV's in Europe are Multi-Standard (PAL, NTSC, SECAM) but I suspect the majority only accept PAL.

Jeff umm wrong (sorry).

I would say in Australia, (we stock the majority of european brands/tv) around 90% of tv's here will playback ntsc.

All sony's produced after 1992 will display it, all panasonics, infact anything half decent is completely multi standard. This goes for all Loewe, grundig, metz and other euro brands as well. If it is not really cheap and nasty it will play NTSC.

Here in holland I think 50-75% can display NTSC...

Jeff Donald February 8th, 2003 05:26 AM

I have found that while traveling in Europe, most the TV's in hotels do not display NTSC (I should have qualified my earlier statement). I'm sure this is changing over time. It may also be related to some hotels anti-theft precautions. The signal would have to go through the VCR to get to the TV. Disconnecting the VCR would set off an alarm and I had no real desire to test it. In Africa, not sure about S. Africa, none of the TV's (again in Hotels) would play NTSC.

I think the main reason that TV's in hotels do not play it because
they tend to be the cheapest TV's around (at least in the hotels
I've been in)... This might change over time indeed...

Jeff Donald February 8th, 2003 05:48 AM

Yes, that's unfortunate that hotels do that. But, that is going to be most Americans experience when traveling Europe. But to put in perspective, the chances of finding a multi-standard TV or VCR in the states in a motel are about 0% and I doubt more than a few % in households.
