Newbie and Clueless

This is all new to me and I'm an amateur. I have a new Sony DCR-DVD305 that burns on the mini RW DVD's. I have shot some video and finialized the mini DVD. On my laptop I have Adobe Premiere Pro which I have never used. I'm trying to get the footage from the mini DVD's into the program so I can make a DVD. I have tried Capture and import pointing it to the DVD and had no luck. I also hooked the camera to my laptop using the USB cable with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What format are the files on your original recorded disk. Is it mpg2? Or are they .vob files ?

You may need to run a conversion.

Is there a firewire output on the camera ? If so, you may be able to import into Premiere via the firewire, by capture process. For any body to help you, this basic info will be helpful.

Questions

The camera only has the smaller USB plug.

When I browse to the RW DVD I see 3 folders. DCIM, VIDEO_RM, and VIDEO_TS. The VIDEO_TS has VOB files in it.

I'm not very familiar with cameras that use mini DVDs, but I believe you need to use the software that came with the camera to transfer the files to your computer. After they're transferred, you should be able to import them into Premiere to edit.
I don't think Premiere can get files directly from the camera because these camcorders aren't designed to allow easy editing - they're more for recording and then watching them directly off the disc which is why they aren't the best choice if you plan to edit your video, but should be okay if you don't mind the extra step.

I am assuming there is no USB method in your camera literature that allow you to capture video from the DVD.

The only method then is to convert the VOB files to an editable form. The easiest editing is .avi level, so you would probably want that over the .mpg2 type file. You should search web for converstion tools. I Googled convert vob to avi and came up with some. You might able be able to find a free program.
