How do they use black n white and color in same shot?
 

Can someone please expalin how this is done. How do you have a frame shot in black and white but still have color in it? Like in this rap video by T.I. they are on the beach and the water and everything else is black n white but the girls and sun are in color. I dont understand how they do it at all because its alot of movement going in the video which eliminates a couple of my theories. please explain someone?! Also what is the best camera to use if you do alot of taping of artist in dark clubs, concerts, etc but you still want to do good quality short films and docs....thanks

It could be that they shot the girls on a green screen, and the beach is another element that is composited in.

2- For your other question about what camera is best, you may be better off splitting it into its own thread. It's easier to keep track of threads if it's one subject per thread.

FYI - there's an IMHO brilliant use of this technique throughout the movie "Sin City."

This can be easily acheived using the 'Colorpass' filter in Adobe Premiere.

you need to generate a mask (black and white picture) that is used to make a transition between the B&W track and the color track.
there are several way to generate this mask.
1) rotoscoping means manually define the contour of the mask, picture per picture. This option is valid only for very short sequences.

2) Take a picture of the background and use as a "clean plate",
Then substracting the clean background with the video, give you only the difference. This apply only in specific conditions (no camera move, static bacground).

3) use special software (like mokey) that is able to generate this mask almost automatically.

4) Cheat and use a subject on green screen, but this is possible only in specific conditions (you subject is on foreground)

As Giroud suggested, this isn't too hard with short clips - I just did this in Vegas (6.0) without too much trouble. You need to create a mask for the image you want to appear in color - You don't need this for every frame - I was able to do it pretty well with one every seven to ten frames (you may need more if your source moves around a lot). Then just composite that over the same unmaksed clip which has had the color saturation set to 0 (I used the Vegas Secondary Color Corrector).
