Analog Capture problems
 

Two weeks ago I purchased a computer through a local computer firm. Everything works great except for analog capture. The problem is with the ATI All-in-Wonder 1800XL Video Card 256mb DDR3 card that we installed. The technicians are working with me to correct the problem. They have completely removed all components, software, and registry and then reinstalled all the latest updates but still we can't analog capture. I can do a work-a-round by hooking up a VCR or any other analog source to my Digital camera then via firewire to the computer with no problems. The ATI card is suppose to analog capture without having to do all of that. No video or audio signel coming in. At this point we're running out of options. Has anyone had the same problem or know of anyone that has had it. If we can't correct the problem then we may have to look for another display card that can analog capture.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about the ATI All-In-Wonder cards but AFAIK most people seem to get best results using a dedicated capture card or a firewire capture device such as those from Canopus or Pinnacle rather than something integrated into the display card. I have a Canopus ADVC110 bidirectional A/D & D/A firewire interface that works like a champ with excellent results.

I needed to capture VHS to convert it to DVD and lucked onto a great solution:

Has a built-in MPEG chip to convert incoming video directly to DivX or MPEG (no long software conversion!) The included editing software was garbage, but I bought Sony Vegas Studio and had no further problems.

Worked really, really, really great for me.

Sorry for not getting back too this thread sooner. It turns out that the video card was bad. We tried to get another but due to the high demand no in the US had one. So we installed my old Pinnacle Sys DV500 card and went with a ATI 1600 card. Now everything works great. Analog capture is no problem. Thanks again for all the help.

Unless you are using a time base corrector or time base stabilizer when playing back the original vhs tape, you are not getting the full quality of the signal no matter what computer card you use.
