$ on cameras....

How do people determine the $ for used XL1s?
Ive been searching since before Xmas and have come to find used pricing just under new.
Average cost of a XL1 being 2600 and up used.
While Ive found 3 places that sell the XL1s Brand new at 2800 and 2900. These arent "gray market" and are in stock with all accessories etc from Canon.
Only the PAL XL1s go for reasonable $.
Can anyone give me the reasoning for this?

If you can actually get a new XL1S Kit including all standard options and factory warranty from an authorized Canon reseller for 2800, that would be the way to go. But I doubt seriously if that is the case. The fact that used XL1s are going for about the same price should tell you that something is wrong with that picture.

$2800 is far, far below dealer cost and I seriously doubt you can actually buy a US-market full-warranty product at that price. Buyer beware; there's a catch there somewhere.

Heres the quoate from 1 of the 3 I found that state they ARE NOT "gray market' dealers:
"All items advertised on this site are Brand New and carry a full U.S. Manufacturers warranty, unless clearly stated otherwise.
All our cameras come with the standard accessories from the manufacture. "
This particualr company has it for $2999.49 US.
This particular comp[any had a 4 pout of 5 star rating. The other 2 where 3 and 3.5 respectively.

They closed at 3 PM Friday so I couldnt call them.
Im going to contact all 3 this week and record my conversations with them asking about in stock and going over what does and dosent come with their cameras , checking it against Canons list.
I will order one - IF THEY are on the up and up and then post here where and how much.

OK heres the 411 Ive found out form the companies Ive contacted.
First. They are tricky. The big trick is Import Vs Domestic.
They say that the only difference is that the Import version dosent come with the standard 1 year warranty.
The chepaest I found for these are 2990 (Express) and 3100(US1).
1 company I had to leave a call back cause the sales person couldnt confirm stock.. (EDigitalMall)
Maffifamilywholesaleelectronics.com had US Version for 3480. In stock.

Has anyone of you had or used an "import" version?

I can highly recommend ZGC.com, one of Chris's sponsors. I have just returned my two month old XL1S to Canon for what appears to be some sort of tape tracking/head alignment problem. Christine at ZGC has offered (without asking I might ad) to follow up with her contact at Canon to see that the repair is timely and complete. I just received an email from her with the Canon repair number for my camera. Excellent service after the sale in my opinion. You may pay a little more, but the piece of mind is hard to quantify and to purchase a new camera in this price range without a factory warranty would not be prudent. Just my opinion.
