mini-dv/vcr

what is the solution for needing a mini-dv deck and a vcr? i know what i would buy if this was best of all possible worlds but since i got a budget (and not a big one either) i have been looking at the jvc decks that house both vhs and mini-dv. i am a bit skeptical, though. anyone have experience with the jvc dvs2u?

I use a Canon ZR-10 mini-dv camera. Here's Why.
1.) as a dicontinued camera it was inexpensive
2.) it's very compact, sits on dask by computer very nicely
3.) I have an extra camera to use.
4.) It saves my XL-1 heads.

Camera tape transports are really not designed for the multi-speed, back-and-forth motion wear often involved in logging and capture processes. This is particularly true of inexpensive cameras. Changing tape direction on a camera's transport can often be a 3-5 sec maneuver, something that can really add up in time and wear. Although many folks use an inexpensive camera as their editing deck it's often not as economical or as practical as it may seem.

For miniDV-only applications I recommend a deck such as the Panasonic AGDV1000 or AGDV2000. I have used the 1000 for over 18 months and it's really been excellent. Although it costs a bit more than an inexpensive miniDV camera it's transport is quick and designed for the job of a deck.

My 2 cents.

yes, i have considered both of these options and though am still curious about the jvc. still, anyone out there used that particular piece of equipment?

Recently purchased the JVC srvs20. Few things to get used to yet, but seems pretty good. Easy to shuttle to DV tapes, and view on separate screen, also seems to hook up to the fcp system well. Instruction book vague, but the help at the 800 # is there for you. Not totally happy with the transfer from dv to Svhs or vhs, (not as clear as I would like) but this is probably true with any system. All in all pretty happy with it, although $$. Found mine fairly decent $ at professional tape and comm. supply out of texas.

We use the Panasonic AG-DV2000 unit for this purpose. This is an extremely well-built, solid, unit for playing back and cueing tapes. We also use it for converting from other formats to MiniDV. Finally, it can also use standard size DV tapes when larger times are needed.
