Playback using LCD projector and ext speakers
 

Hi I am a relatively new user of a Canon XL1s. For presetations
I will be playing back the video recorded using the XL1s connected to an LCD projector. The projector has a small speaker which is not very load so I am thinking that I would just connect the video from the camera to the LCD projector and the audio to seperately powered multimedia computer speakers.

The reason for multimedia computer speakers is that later during the presetation I need to use a laptop(not at the samew time). I am hoping to have just one set of speakers that I can use for both. When not using the camera I will connect them to the laptop.

Can anyone see problems with using multimedia computer speakers. Are there impedance/ matching problems?
Can I do any damage to the camera audio output?

I did try some cheap TDK multimedia speakers and noticed that the max volume was significantly reduced when connected to the camera compared to the laptop

Any help would be much appreciated.

You may be seeing a impedance missmatch effect. The impedance of the audio output jack of the XL1s is on the order of 3K, and that may be too high for some computer amplified speakers input impedance. Many laptop audio output jack are much lower output impedance (to drive earphones). You mght try the XL1s headphone jack output - it has a lower output impedance., but also has a lower output level so it may not solve the whole issue.

I've used moderate cost keyboard amps for some projection presentations; e.g., CRATE. It is probably a better sort of device for filling a larger room with sound.
