You can store files, but that is just a file like you have on a hard drive.

To actually play the video, you need a format compatible with iPod. I use Quicktime Pro to accomplish that.

If you are just looking to transfer the footage files, then you are essentially intending to use your iPod as a regular drive. If memory serves, what you need to do is connect your iPod to the host computer, open up iTunes, and somewhere in the iTunes interface you will find preference settings for the iPod (they only show up when the iPod is connected). It has been a long time so I can't remember what the path is to get to those settings, but I remember them being there. You can choose an option that allows your iPod to be recognized as a drive, and it will mount on your system whenever you connect it to your computer to sync. (If you are on a Mac, this also means you will have to eject the drive before disconnecting just as you need to do with regular drives.

Once you have done this, the next time you sync the iPod, it will also show up as a drive on your system and you can begin dragging and dropping onto it just as you would any other drive. You won't be able to view these video files on the iPod because it is only using the unit as a storage device, outside the limitations of the iPod interface.

If you are intending to put the video on the iPod so they are viewble on the iPod, then what you need to do is convert your video files into an iPod compatible video format. (You should be able to find pre-sets in the Quicktime Pro export options. There are also some 3rd party applications that do this very easily.) Then you must open iTunes and drag your newly converted video files into the iTunes interface, and put them into a playlist of your choosing. After syncing, you should be able to navigate your video playlists and find your viewable video content there.

Hope this helps.

If you are planning on watching them on the iPod, Compressor, which comes with Final Cut Studio, has the ability to compress it in iPod format. Hope that helps.

On the PC side if you don't already have Quicktime Pro, there is a free encoder called "Super encoder". It encodes to many different video formats to include iPod. It also accepts many different formats. It works very well for a free program.
