HDMI Advantages on AVCHD Cameras
 

I generally just capture to the SDHC card on my AVCHD camera. But as I have started using the AVCHD output more, I have learned a few things that seem to make it a huge advantage over HDV cameras 1394 output.

I use the HDMI output for monitoring off my AVCHD camera. HDMI output is uncompressed digital, so the image quality is exactly what the imager sees and great for uncompressed capture. A 1394 TS off a HDV camera is a highly compressed 4:2:0 digital signal. The HDMI uncompressed signal is 4:2:2 colorspace which is great for keying. HDMI also supports cables up to 20M in length and 100+M is possible with special equipment.

A lot of folks seem to be using the BM Intensity Pro card for HDMI capture. Blackmagic Design: Intensity Seems like a good option.

Albeit the footage is pretty remarkable, it would be nice for those keying shoots.

Actually Jeff, cameras like the Sony Z5 HDV camera also offer uncompressed, native sensor resolution from the HDMI output. ;)

I agree, having that HDMI output is quite nice.
As Ken notes, it is also available on Sony cams, and perhaps others. I just don't think I'd buy a cam without it now, I use it to output to my ne 8" monitor and its great.
