HMC70 - Filming at night

I am going to be using the HMC70 to film a small Italain town in the night time, trying to capture the atmosphere and ambiance etc.

I have no external light at the moment, do I need one, and what should I go for?

Also, what are the best settings for the camera for this type of filming?

I would try setting the camera to low light scene mode. Aviod any focus problem by switching it manual focus. A camera light is a must 40 to 50 watt. Keep close to what you shooting and avoid zooming and extreme wide shot. Good luck!

Comer 900 LED light is a good one to be used. Check out this thread http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/photon-ma...ed-lights.html

Hi James

I have 2 x HMC72's (that's the 70 in PAL)

Best for night shots is to go into manual and let the camera select the shutter, speed and aperture and it will more than likely also kick in some gain. At this point what you can do is simply back off the gain just a little until you have no video noise. If you have zebras on they should also indicate over-exposure on bright street lights but just make sure that your backs are black and accept the setting on the menu.

The low light preset might work so some situations but I avoid it. I also use a DIY LED video light on the camera so I can light items within say 10' of me well...people etc etc.
In fact if you use an on cam LED light you might even get away with shooting auto and still get nice ambient mood as the light will fool the exposure system into thinking there is enough light and keep the gain down enough to avoid any noise

Chris
