A more somber assignment today

This past week, we had a local kiteboarder killed in a shark attack. Today, about 500 surfers took part in a paddle-out on the beach in his memory.

Well done, and being a surfer as well that grew up in Satellite beach that has to be the only time I have seen that many (from that many different styles) get along for more than 5 minutes. The contrast of the sky and your interviews face was great it really showed some great dynamic range that is hard to find a lot of the time.

And gods speed and clean breaks Stephan.

Nice. You got alot of good cut-aways.

The one criticism I have is that you need to remember the 'rule of thirds' when composing your shots. Putting subjects, background objects or horizon lines on the imaginary lines which divide the frame into thirds horizonatally and vertically will go a long way to making your footage look more proffessional.

Sherri Nestico February 13th, 2010 12:04 PM

I'm not one for conventionality

The rule of thirds is great for TV, but I don't think it's necessary for small-format delivery on the web. I like to document the news, not set it up.

Agreed John. Good composition is applicable for any visual medium. It doesn't matter if your screen is 40 feet or 4 inches. I agree with Sherri on set up shots for news but it doesn't mean I don't try to make my moving pictures look like photos when the pause button is pressed.
