HMC40 Puerto Rican Holiday

This is an event I covered for my wife's family business. I had many opportunities to experiment with low-light performance. I some cases you'll notice the HMC40 wasn't up to the task, but overall better than I would expect. In most cases, a good camera mounted light panel would have been a big improvement.

Wow Dan

Your video made me want to take a cruise to San Juan! Good stuff! The beaches are gorgeous!

I have been to San Juan many times on cruises, but we usually arrive in the evening and don't get any farther than Senor Frogs. The one time we were there during the day, I toured that old fort on the ocean. Now I wish I would have taken one of the tours of the countryside.

What kind of business does your wife do? Was that some sort of management retreat thing? And if so, where can I sign up? LOL.

Footage looks good*, but those titles look a bit cheesy. Comic Sans with a glowing shadow?

*I especially liked the shots around 8:42 and 9:10.

Thanks for the encouraging words Sherri. Happy to hear the video brought back memories. I too was first in San Juan on a cruise, but even after this trip I believe I could spend another three days in Old San Juan.

The trip was an electrical distribution customer appreciation event. My wife and I own a very different company and are invited because I'm the photographer and videographer. It gives me a good excuse to purchase new gear too.

Thanks for watching.

Nicely done, Dan. If this footage is anything to go by, the HMC40 seems to be an amazingly capable little camcorder. I'm beginning to wonder if I should trade in my Canon HF S100! :)

I agree with you that low-light performance could be better, but what I saw in your video where low-light scenes were concerned was quite acceptable.

One thing I did notice was that blues and greens seem a tiny bit oversaturated - almost unnatural in their appearance. Maybe this is a quirk unique to the HMC-40.

Dan Carter February 15th, 2010 03:05 PM

Thanks for watching Steve. In my opinion the HMC40 is a fine device.

The oversaturation you see is by design. I was shooting most of the daylight video at +5 Chroma Level.

Kind Regards,
Dan
