HMC40/80 in 1080 25P Mode Problem
 

Hi Guys

I have a break from weddings so I thought I would give my progressive modes a shot!!! (I have been shooting in 1080i at weddings)

Any great ideas on why the footage pixellates???? I have attached a still shot and if you look at the tree branches you can see extensive pixellation there. Cam was in PH 1080 25P mode (PAL cameras) and it also seems to do the same thing in 720 as well.

Some help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want this sort of thing in my wedding footage when the season begins in 2 months!!!!

Hi

That is a very odd result, it doesn't look like typical compression artefacts you get with AVCHD.

What recording rate/quality is it set for?

What are you using to view the files, it might be the decoding software adding those blocks.

Thanks a lot...I found the issue!!! The MTS files are pristine when played in VLC media player BUT because my DuoCore 2.2GHz struggles with AVCHD I usually transcode the files to HDV using Upshift..I encoded these the same as I usually do at 50mbps and leave the interlacing setting at "Copy From Input" (since it's already progressive) and set key frames and GOP at 1 (same settings I use for interlaced transcoding) and THAT'S where the pixellation is coming from.!!!!

I wonder why Upshift doesn't appear to be too happy converting progressive footage??? When I transcode normal 1080i I use the same settings but set interlacing to "Progressive" so I have de-interlaced footage for Sony Vegas ... it only seems to create the pixellation when trying to convert progressive raw footage.

Thanks again for identifying the source of the problem..at least I know the cameras are OK!!! Hmmm maybe I need to see if Cineform does a better job???
