HS900, storage questions?
 

Hi all,

I have some more questions regarding my impending purchase: -

1. Can I offload my 1080P footage to a storage device? I'm going to get the HS900 with the 220GB hard drive and was wondering if I could offload the footage at the end of each day whilst retaining the 1080P quality; I was thinking a 1TB device?

I won't be able to take a computer with me so a small device that I could plug the camcorder into would be ideal.

2. Alternatively, I could just buy cards and wondered are these any good, i.e. are they fast enough; a friend said I need 133 x cards but they are around £50 each or more!

Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 Memory Card - these have been recommended but just getting views on similar :0)

Integral 16GB UltimaPro SDHC Card (Class 10) -

This is 2-3 times the price; how much better is this one: -

Lexar 16GB 133X Professional SDHC Card - Class 10 -

That product looks ideal but is way out of my pocket - here in the UK, I can get the SDHC cards for a fraction of that so will probably go that route, although that would have solved my problem!

I've just ordered 2 of the Lexar 16GB 133X Professional SDHC Card - for £21 each, 62:00 AUD, and will get a few more once I get the okay the others are suitable for HD recording

Transcend wont give you any problems. I have been using them for a couple of years, most recently in my EX1, TM900 and 550D, they have not missed a beat. Good cards at a very reasonable price. You can always pay double the price for other cards, if you like spending money. Class 6 or 10 are more than adequate.

Nice to get first-hand opinions with real user experience. I will go for the as they are recommended :0)

ONE THING I must ask though: - If 1080P is recorded at 25Mbps, how can a 20Mbps card record it properly?

I'm off to London later this week to collect my HS900; £970:00 was the best I could get with the 5 year Panasonic warranty. I have seen it for £935:00 but they are online orders only and you can't get the extended warranty without doing a demo :0(

I'll also pick up the 3 hour battery; £90:00

I have a TM700 - the manual specifies a minimum of a Class 4 card. Of course, a higher speed card will allow you to move the captured media more quickly between the card & your PC.

Edit: Just downloaded the HDC-TM900P/PC HDC-HS900P/PC manual - it also specifies a minimum of Class 4.
Edit2: Error, Error. I made a stupid math error. I have a 99MB, 33 sec media file that registers 25.2Mbps from MediaInfo. So, 99MB / 33 secs * 8 bits/Byte = 24 Mbps (close enough to 25.2Mbps). Deleted the erroneous statement.

The Panasonic HDC SD900 records, with the setting 1080p50, at 28 Mbps.

The Class 10 cards must, by definition, write at least 10 MB/s (= 80 Mbps). If they claim that the card writes at 20 MB/s than it means it can write at 160 Mbps.
Class 6 cards write at least 6 MB/s (= 48 Mbps). The class number gives the minimal writing speed.
1B = 8xb
So, both card write speeds are more than enough for the Panasonic HDC 900.
Class 4 cards are theoretically also fast enough.
