New Sony DCR-PC300K (1/3" CCD RGB filter)

This new matchbox type camcorder promises better image quality with 3MP stills, 2MP video and a large 1/3" RGB filter based CCD block.

That's a lot of pixels!!!

Before anybody judges that this cam will be a low-light wonder because of its 1/3" CCD, note that the minimum lux rating is 15. Let's see how Sony US rates it.

Still EIS ne.

In any case, should be another interesting new cam to check.

This looks like a nice camera .... small compact and possibly a lot of punch. It seems as if they are making it seem like a 3ccd camera but form what I can understand it only has a 1/3" RGB ccd.

Like Allan says..... we'll have to see how SONY US rates it. But none the less it might have some possibilities.

Does anyone know when it is coming out to the public? I just bought and I'm awaiting the delivery of the Sony PDX-10. I figured why not jump right in since I just saw the PD-150 in person..... WOW (not as big/heavy as it looks)..... plus the DV953 I had on order, was taking a long time to ship and availability of that camera is slim everywhere here in the states.

It should be interesting like Allan said. We'll see!

My God! All these new nice cams coming out: the GS100, Opturas and now a Sony PC300! And here poor Pokey is still bent on collecting bottles to buy the MX5000:

Interesting, it claims that benefits of the RGB filter and large 1/3 inch CCD to be:

2MP effective for DV

Vivid colours like having 3CCD (but does it reduce jaggies?)

Brigther image and ability to photograph in the evenings, similar performance to the VX2000

A direct comparison of the 1/3 inch CCD to the 1/6 inch CCD - who are they aiming at here? :) claiming better resolution for stills?

Frank Granovski August 1st, 2003 10:11 AM

The market is intended for people who want to carry around 1 easy to hold small cam, which takes good video and stills. I'm sure this cam will be a best seller---that is if there is nothing wrong with it. :)

PS: any mention of blueteeth? :)

Yik Kuen August 1st, 2003 06:39 PM

Yes, Bluetooth is included.
It's capable of 16x9 too, which 950 doesn't deliver.

I guess 1/3" CCD with RGB filter could be only as bright as conventional 1/4" CCD.

According to the Sony website, their intention is not to beat 950 in terms of quality but I think this cam comes second.

"I'm sure this cam will be a best seller---that is if there is nothing wrong with it."

One thing wrong with it is the price (MSRP JPY198,000)..it's going to be the most expensive one out there...setting an MSRP for 1-CCD cam is an outdated thing in Japan.

Frank Granovski August 1st, 2003 08:45 PM

"MSRP JPY 198,000," what's the GS100 going for? (in JPY)

Allan Rejoso August 1st, 2003 09:12 PM

GS100K has no MSRP, hence, sellers are basically free to decide on their selling prices.

In big stores, between JPY138,000 to JPY158,000.

In discount shops, around JPY120,000.

Frank Granovski August 1st, 2003 10:02 PM

What's 120,000 worth? $900 US or so?

Allan Rejoso August 1st, 2003 10:32 PM

JPY120,000 is about $1,025

Frank Granovski August 1st, 2003 11:58 PM

Thanks. So when this little cam hits N.A., it's going to hurt the pocket book. I wonder how much more we'll have to pay for one: $1299? Maybe more? That's why I'd rather have a MX5000 today, than spend a year's salary on something that'll be obsolete tomorrow. Click here:
