Nothing like slapping Canon in the face

Nothing like slapping Canon in the face. Where's the shame?

Someone stole the BB's famous poker cam line, "for shooting fine deep shadows and dork blacks." In Pana's latest Pro Video Newsletter, Pepi was quoted as saying that the DVX100 "camera has remarkable picture quality and it gives you rich, saturated colors with plenty of dark shadows and deep blacks to yield depth of field, more typical of a 'film look'. He was also quoted as saying, "Previously we owned Canon XL1s with wide angle lenses, XLR adaptors and other accessories. We were always...bothered by the bulkiness of the Canon cameras, not to mention that they did not have an on-board LCD monitor, built in XLR ports, nor a built-in wide-angle lens, all attributes of the AG-DVX100. When we realized that Panasonic was releasing this camera, we decided to sell all our former gear and buy the AG-DVX100s instead."

I don't feel that this insult to the Canon XL1 can be justified. For those of you who have used the XL1 and seen its footage would agree. I also feel Pana should have asked BB for permission in using his famous line. :)

The Panasonic MX1000/MX8/PV-DV852 was known as the poker cam, because it's slim and very long. The MX1000 is a Japanese Domestic, the MX8 and PV-DV852 are stripped down versions of it. The MX8 is PAL and the PV-DV852 is the North American version.

I really feel that when someone says something like that they are really not being fair and objective. No one camera does it all today and certain features on one machine may be lacking on another.

Certainly if I were a gun and run filmmaker I might look very seriously DVX. However, if I wanted to use a stable of lenses it would be hard to ignore the XL-1S.

Pana USA seems to have hit below the belt with this news letter article. At the same time, they don't like people informing North Americans about some of Pana's top consumer cams selling everywhere but in North America---and if they do bring them in, they're usually stripped down and over-priced. Dumping on a Canon product to prop up DVX100 sales is like mud wrestling. If that's Pana's new marketing strategy, then I wish them luck. They'll need it.

BB, my favorite Swedish pornographer!!! Didn't realize he was still around. I'll have to check out his site again, and again, and again :).

Well, Pepsi said it, not Pana. You can count on the marketing types to take advantage of any edge they can get. Being that Pepsi said that and not some estoric independent is worth the risk from a marketing point of view. I'm sure the add will have extacly no effect on existing Canon users. The incredible lense options for the Canon can't be ignored.

There are adds for attracting new customers, then there are adds strictly for preaching to the converted (mind share). I am guessing that add is for the latter.

Pepi said it, but Pana USA published it as market hype/advertising.
