Bryan gave me a little info about those hard-to-get Hoya ultra slim filters. They are especially useful for using them on wide angle adaptors---ones which come with front filter threads.

The Hoya has 2 different slim lines, one with no threads and one with threads. Both are Multi Coated.

1. The UMC Ultra slim has no front thread and 3mm deep
2. Super pro has a filter thread on the outboard side and is 3mm as well.

I have a question regarding the use of a UV filter and the PV-DV953.

I use to own a PV-DV952 and when I attached a 43 mm Tiffen UV filter to the lens, I could attach it directly to the lens, then screw back on the Pana supplied standard lens hood. Then the Pana lens cap attached directly to the lens hood to protect the lens.

Now I just purchased a PV-DV953 and noticed differences. I can't attach a 43mm B+W UV filter directly to the lens and then re-attach the Pana lens hood. The lens hood on the DV953 is not nearly as deep as the lens hood from the DV952. So what I have to do is first attach the DV-953 lens hood, then using the lens hood threads, attach the 43 mm B+W UV filter to the outside of the lens hood. Then attach the Pana lens cap directly to the B+W filter.

Is this normal for the DV-953 ? I am wondering if this is just a difference in the construction of the DV953 to the DV952. It seems to be like that because of the depth of the Pana lens hood is different between the two.

Does anybody know of a slim-line 43 mm UV filter that they can reccomend to use on the DV-953 ? Or does a UV filter on the DV-953 always have to be attached to the outside of the Pana lens hood ?

Adam, I would use a slim UV, then find a lens hood that fits into the lens housing which screws onto the front of the filter. There are many brands and shapes available. Another option is to get a slip-on hood, that is one which slips/slides over the lens housing, like the one that comes with the MX300A. B&H, Heliopan, Hoya, to name a few, make hoods. Perhaps go to a "professional" camera store and see what they have. You can always e-mail B&H to find out. I've always found B&H to be helpful, via e-mail.
