So you got your MX cam---now what?

Many of you wonder if it was all worth it, spending that time researching then scraping together the scratch and even bankrupting the piggy bank for the big buy. But by golly you got it now: the finest tool for the inspiring non-film film-maker your pockets could provide! (Welcome to the club.) It's small, it's a 3-chip and it's a beaut. Stand proud and gaze unto the heavens and ponder about what you can do now. What can you do now? I was hoping you'd ask.

String the neck strap through the cam and keep it slung around your neck. Leave it slung where ever ye be, except in your bed, your bath or while you swim. Keep the battery charged and get ready to remove the lens cap at a moment's notice, for you never know when and what wonders await. If you see someone slip and fall down, witness a fender bender, a bar brawl or even see your dog, Spot, smiling at you, grasp the shiny metal thingy with your right, and remove the cap with your left----the PUSH the record button with your thumb to make a movie. Oh, it's so much fun. Just go shoot anything! That's what the MX cam is for.

Projection? You betcha. :-))

PS: and tonight we're gonna have 30 c metres of snow. Ho, boy! For sure I'm getting up early tomorrow and shoot me some with my MX cam. It'll be accidents galore.

Shoot video, make money, capture history, what else?

I have never looked back since introduction to digital video (I was playing with analogue video for some time, but equipment cost and linear editing was a serious headache).

Most of all, have fun shooting!

Well, there's the cheeky stuff, but you'll need an eye for it...a roving eye that is. :-))

Go wild, push the envelope, explore beyond those boundaries, go where no man has gone before...

....and come back and show us some clips and grabs.

I will be getting mine as soon those Tax Returns are finished. The deadline? You bet, 31/01/04. The penalties of being late? A camera-worth.

Joe Carney January 6th, 2004 07:35 PM

Uh....well..... I lent mine to my son before the christmas holidays so he could shoot a wedding. I haven't seen it since. I think he's holding on to it until I go halves with him on a new DVX100A.
(This means I pay for about 70 percent and never get to use it).

He is thinking about getting the PAL version since he's having so much fun with my MX500.
Hey Cheong, what are they going for in Singapore these days? hehehe.

He has had great luck using Vegas to convert to NTSC.

Yow Cheong Hoe January 6th, 2004 10:23 PM

Hi Joe,

Not "Cheong", keep it simple, "YowCH". And if Chris is reading this, please notice the difficulties I face when I am not allowed my nick :-)

DVX100 is about SGD5500 or thereabouts (US$3300), and considered a specialist item (no mass market discount like the MX500). The DVX100A should be about that price, too.

Convert PAL to NTSC, wow! Headache issues and for the time spent, just pay for NTSC.

I am sharing your grief over the loss of your MX500...

How's Sarah doing?

Joe Carney January 7th, 2004 04:45 PM

Sarah is doing great. She is still enrolled in Timberlake and getting better all the time. She now remembers who I am and has pretty much returned to her normal sarcastic self, hehehe.

She still has problems with short term memory and math, but the doctors are pretty hopeful the math issue will be overcome. She was an honor student and it still shows. She was able to come home for Christmas and New Years. I finally talked to her on the phone. When my wife went back to visit, she stopped by and saw her.

Sorry about the Cheong, I thought that was your real first name and Yow was the family name. Yowch sort of like CarneyJo?

As far as Vegas converting PAL to NTSC? Not much longer than rendering normal effects out to NTSC, really. He was going directly to DVD.
And if editing in DVX100As 24 or 25p, will be the same issue when going to DVD. Just more picture to use with the PAL version.

I think I will buy the DVX100A PAL for myself and let him keep the
the MX500. That will teach him to mess with his old man. hehehe.

Other topic: An introduction to Chinese names (Maybe I should start a new thread for this)

Using my name for example: Yow Cheong Hoe

I'm "Mr Yow", so is my father and grandfather. That runs in the family. "Yow" is my surname.

"Cheong Hoe" is my name, I have no brothers, but my male cousins from my father's brothers are Cheong Fai, Cheong Wah, etc. Cheong happens to be the 'generation' name. My sons will be "Bak something" (pronounced "buck"), probably "Bak Hin" for my son to be born in March 2004.

Here, you call me "Cheong Hoe" or "Hoe" for short.

"YowCH" is a nickname that was coined by some friends about 20 years ago, and stuck, and this helps in dealing with Westerners.

Many Chinese people has one charater for name, e.g. Yow Zhong, or Yow Lek.

There are Chinese surnames with two characters, e.g. "Seetoh" or "Awyang". They will have names like "Awyang Zheng Hwa" (4 characters) or Seetoh Kin (3 charaters).

If I have a Christian/English/Foreign name, it'll be "John Yow Blah Blah", and you'll call me "John".

For the internet, I am best known as "YowCH".

Very often, to fill in names in forms designed in the West, chinese people will fill "Cheong Hoe Yow". More confusion.

Frank Granovski January 7th, 2004 09:22 PM

May I just call you, Yo!? :-))

Yow Cheong Hoe January 7th, 2004 09:33 PM

That's a little too short, and you may be calling a Mr Yo somewhere else!

BTW, "Yow" rhymes with "Now" not "Low".

Frank Granovski January 7th, 2004 10:06 PM

Got it, Mr. Yow. ;-))

Joe Carney January 8th, 2004 01:22 PM

>>Here, you call me "Cheong Hoe" or "Hoe" for short.<<

BTW...Never use 'Hoe' around Americans. It's derogative sexual slang for a woman or prostitute. As in 'She is one fine ho'. Used a lot in rap songs unfortunately.

I'll stick with Yowch.

Tommy Haupfear January 8th, 2004 04:11 PM

I work at a software company with a lot of Chinese developers. A few years back a gentelman started with the name of Che Quen Wang (or something close).

As soon as people started referring to him as Chicken Wang he quickly became Kevin Wang.

Frank Granovski January 8th, 2004 07:24 PM

Some Persian names are the same way. A common female name is Nazi. A friend of my wife has this name, and that's how it's spelled.

Yow Cheong Hoe January 8th, 2004 07:58 PM

Hoe and Chicken and Nazi, that happens.

That's why, YowCH. Everybody has the same meaning for YowCH! When you sit on a pin, that's what you say...
