Langston Sessoms January 26th, 2004 11:43 AM

bueller?

Tommy Haupfear January 26th, 2004 04:27 PM

Count me in as an intersted party.

Rows and rows of round hoods.

Aykut Ozen January 26th, 2004 04:53 PM

I'm searching the same thing for my dv852 too...i couldn't find a 43mm rectangular lens hood ...Hama makes 49 52 55mm ones...i think you need a step up ring to use one of those...please let me know if you find any other alternatives...Thanks

Langston Sessoms January 26th, 2004 07:09 PM

this is the closest thing i can find without getting a step up ring.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=111908&is=REG

looks like 43mm is a very irregular size.

and i'm not ever sure if tha hood would work on a dv852

Guy Bruner January 26th, 2004 07:57 PM

Take a look at the Lee hoods at www.adorama.com. Rather pricey...but, you can get a stepup ring.

Fred Alberni January 26th, 2004 08:49 PM

I think the outer most thread on the DV-852 is either 50 mm or 51 mm. This is the part that has to be unscrewed in order to put the 43 mm UV lens in. This thread is an internal thread and I measured it by an inch ruler. It's roughly 2 inches.

Langston Sessoms January 26th, 2004 09:15 PM

i'll make a run to a local shop this weekend and see what i can figure out.

Justin Boyle January 27th, 2004 04:55 AM

i have also been looking for a lens hood however for a 953. It is an impossible task. i think the reason why panasonic might not have made one available is because it would have been too hard for them to move the flash. lazy i reckon. either way i reckon it is the only way to make the cameras look remotely professional. i have a big mic on top mine and doesn't look bad but i think that a large lens hood will just look the part. i think that a step up ring is the only way and if anyone knows where to get one can you let me know. a 50-60mm hood will look good because that is about the outside diameter is similar to that. anyways look forward to some answers. have posed this question before and even got a suggestion to use a toilet plunger. go figure

I read that as well, and actually I think it's not a bad idea. You have a lot of plungers to choose from---from low end to high end (plungers); but choosing the right one, not to thick and heavy, but not too thin and light, may require a bit of looking around in the toilet sections. :-))

yes i guess that it is a sure fix but probably not the best looking one out there. i would like a lens hood because they look good. Of course there are added benefits but only minimal with panasonics integrated lens hood. That aside though i think the camera does need a good hood because at times you can get some aberation when filming bright light sources. anyway i look forward to getting one that is if i dont' upgrade before then. They are a great camera though but like all cameras there are limits and you have to film around them. i would like a vx-2000 or gl-2 because of their better low light performormance. probably favouring the gl-2 but that is in the distance for now.; unless of course i find an amazing deal on one like i did for my mx-500 but until then i might have to buy myself a few attachments to improve the camera. ie a 2x converter. got access to one 1.4x but need a adapter ring. it only takes out the smallest amount of light. it is big though. anyway i will save that for another thread.

Have you tried any screw-on hoods? Will they fit (screw on to the filter threads)?

I don't think that roundish hoods look bad. There's a small square one on my MX300, but I would rather have a larger roundish one. I recall on one of these threads here, that I posted about a hood that'll fit the MX300---but I know this won't help MX500 and MX8/PV-DV852 owners.

Just do an internet search on "43mm lens hood."

Found a 43mm round rubber lens hood on ebay for $4.49 plus $3.00 shipping. There was another one there for $4.75 with free shipping. I got that one but maybe it'll come up again.

Yow Cheong Hoe January 28th, 2004 05:27 AM

Here I go again,

Prices for 'standard' filter ring sizes are lower, hence target 52, 55, 58 and 62mm.

Pay for a 43 to 52 or a 43 to 55 adaptor, and everything will be cheaper after that, your ND, UV, Polariser, Graduated, Star, Soft, etc.

I got my rubber hood (52mm and 55mm) for Singapore $5.00, that's US$2.90.

Frank Granovski January 28th, 2004 05:43 AM

A good idea, Yow. When you first mentioned this, I considered doing exactly that, so I could use my 52mm filters I have for my Nikon. :-))

Allan Rejoso January 28th, 2004 06:51 AM

Saw that Hama M49, M52, M55 rectangular hood a while ago but that circular portion at the back is not screw type, but rather grip or clip type (on the lens barrel). Is there enough space on the 852 barrel for that or will you be hitting the focus ring?

Round rubber lens hoods for 43mm can be bought for $3 in Tokyo.

Ahhh, don't tell me that. I have 3 Hoya screw-on, round hoods in the 52mm size, and they were $29 Canadian a pop. That would be roughly $23 US. For the 37mm thread size and 43mm---I couldn't even find them locally.

Langston Sessoms January 28th, 2004 12:32 PM

i guess i'll buy a step up ring for my mx1000 once it arrives.

Anthony Claudia January 28th, 2004 07:20 PM

I bought this hood for my 953:

Bought a step- up.. and it fits/ works fantastic.

Cheap too.

Aykut Ozen January 29th, 2004 02:48 AM

Great that's what i was thinking to get for my 852 but wasn't sure if it would work...Thanks for the info..

Jon Kamps February 2nd, 2004 06:46 PM

It is actually a decent lens hood, and the included cap fits nice and tight, however, it certainly is more eye candy than anything else. When I buy a WA, I am going to do a little more serious shopping for a useful hood. I will keep you posted on what I find.

Anyone out there find a good hood for their WA or anamorphic adapter?

Yow Cheong Hoe February 3rd, 2004 08:07 PM

Nice and cool looking hood, but the mic seems way too large!

How do you ensure that the hood is horizontal, such that you don't get uneven light entering or worse, vignetting?

Anthony Claudia February 3rd, 2004 08:51 PM

Well, when you choose a hood, it should be the appropriate size for your lens diameter. There are guidelines you can reference to aid you. This way you are assured that vignetting etc. is not an issue.

To get the hood horizontal, you can eye it fairly accurately by placing the camera on a plum surface and using the guide line on the top of the hood. A slight tilt amounting to a degree or two unlevel will not effect light enterting the lens. Actually, one of the reasons I prefer rectangular hoods to their round cousins, is that you can actaully rotate them to matte out unwanted light (to a degree).

In terms of the mic, I agree, it is a little huge....my wife thinks it is some sort of phallic statement :) I for one am a big advocate of function over fashion however...this azden is a great shotgun mic for the money.
