Sharp VL-Z800U vs Optura Xi or?

With new 1-chip models coming out, I wonder which one will come out on top. Have the cam makers released new info in way of the 2004 1-chip line-up yet? What's new from Pana? Are the DV852's glory days now gone? What about the JVC GR-DV900U? Looks good on paper, anyone own one?

Not sure about the Xi but the Optura 300 (its vertical sibling) is already on clearance.

Maybe there's Canon replacements in the works. Let's hope they won't need to suck light.

Frank, Canon's 2004 releases so far have better lux ratings. The FV100 is rated 7 lux according to Canon Japan. That's a lot of improvement over the 24 and 22 lux ratings of the 300 and Xi respectively.

BTW, the FV100 is one nice cam (would have been nicer if it had a manual focus ring). Image wise, better than the GS200, HC40, Z800/900 in my opinion (its nearest competitors). Very sharp and clean. Color wise, GS200 is richer but as always, Canon's color saturation is warm and natural. If only Canon will make available the manual adjustments similar to Panny, and if only Canon will use the same quality LCD as Panny or Sharp.

Do you have a link for the FV100?

That cam will be available in the US as well but under a different Model No. I remember reading an article in Camcorderinfo.com about the US version of the FVM100. Robin are you there?

Frank Granovski April 15th, 2004 09:33 PM

Wow! Looks like a nice cam. It takes me back to the PV-DV601 days. :-)) 1/3" CCD? Progressive scan? OIS? Full widscreen? (I can't read Japanese.)

Frank Granovski April 15th, 2004 09:35 PM

Er, any more on the Sharp VL-Z800U?

Looks like the FVM100 line is the Elura line here in the states.

Ohh, it's part of the Elura line. So it's not going to be top dog. I guess either the Optura XI will stay or get replaced.

Curtis Rhoads April 16th, 2004 12:04 PM

I keep hoping that Canon will follow Panasonic's lead and release a consumer based 3CCD cam for under $1500! :-)

Of course that will probably never happen, but at least the Xi is a step in the right direction.

Too bad the Elura line doesn't have a focus ring. I would have bought one, especially since it's supposedly using the same 16:9 technique that the Xi uses, widening the angle when capturing to 16:9.
