i know you've all been wondering what Panasonic were going to use on the GS400

i think this might give most ppl a better idea as to what chip they are actually using

I like the 1/4" camcorder CCD with 1290x966 native resolution.

HDV anyone?

isn't that the one that they'll be using in the GS400 anyway?? wasn't it mentioned somewhere in the specs that they were using 1.33MP CCDs?? or did i remember it wrong

no i checked, it's different, well that's what it says on the pana UK site anyway that it is different, but it could be those ones, cos like someone was saying that panasonic use their own CCD's and from this PDF it looks like that have a 1/4" CCD that's capable of doing the resolutions required for the task at hand.

but i'd much prefer the 2/3" CCD further down with a native resolution of 1936x1086 with a 300mV sensitivity

crammed into a GS400 sized package with all the bells and whistles =)

The GS400 is using three 1/4.7" CCDs with 1070k pixels each.

cool, yeah i just read that up in the specs on the UK site,

it still could be that 1/4" in the PDF as the sensitivity would kind readings would kind of match what they are saying about it's low light capabilities.
panasonic and sony are quite competitive, it doesn't make much sense for panasonic to use a competing companies chip in their own camera, when they have a perfectly good solution in house. unless this is just a temporary measure for their up and coming GS500

and have a look at their competing ebook solutions for example. one uses static LCD tech and the other uses E-ink

i think the eInk looks most natural with more curves and less jaggered edges, but i like the idea that the panasonic one can last for upto i think it was 6months on a couple of AA batteries
