For your reference ;-) I got my d40 camera yesterday and I did not have the time to read my manual and took around 200 shots in camera auto mode in the city. It seems that I have been out of town too long and I see more beauty in city now ;-)

Here are the images

Wow, wow, wow! Those are some incredible shots-- I am VERY impressed!

Thank you for posting that. Those images are so crisp and colorful! I absolutely loved all the shots. You have a great talent...

How do you like the new camera? Is it comfortable, light, sturdy? I have got to get myself a real D-SLR. I just can't find my self affording one right now-and that is to bad. :(

Great stuff Leigh! Now you need to make a new thread titled "My New Nikon D40!" :D

Hi Gabriel,

I am quite excited too.

But first bad side on d40 compare to gs400 camera.

GS400 lcd screen can rotate which is great. D40 screen can't rotate, only on the back side of d40.
d40 lcd screen is too small compare to gs400.

I have to use optical view finder to take photos. My gs400 allows me to take photo using my lcd screen in comfort. This is the most significant part effect me. If I want to put the camera on the ground to take photos, I feel shy lying on the ground. One way to get around this is guess and try. This means without see through viewfinder and take a photo first and look at the lcd screen to see what looks like.

The good parts of d40 is of course instant. I don't need to wait around 6 seconds to take another photo. I can just push the button to shoot. It is a pleasure to take photos now with my d40. There are huge amounts of setting which allow me to adjust. The menu of d40 is multi language. I don't need to guess Japanese menu item anymore. I love it. ;-) I have ordered an 8gb sdhc kingston card. I plan to buy a remote controller and an external flash.

>>Now you need to make a new thread titled "My New Nikon D40!"

Do you know any proper forum in dvinfo.net for me to post my images?

Regards
Leigh

Ahh yes. I can see how that would be a problem.

Most of the time when I am using my point and shoot'er, I don't even look at the screen or anything. I just find where I want it, and take the photo. That would not work so well though if you are using manual settings! lol.

I do believe that they make a tilting screen attachment for most DSLR's. I would recommend doing a google search for one if you like to use the LCD screen.

Yes, I have heard that Nikon shoots fast and there is not much a delay. I notice when I use my Canon Elura 100 for still shots, that it takes about 6 seconds before I take another, that can cause a lot of trouble some times.

Sounds like you will have yourself a nice setup here soon! Thats good to hear...

What do you use for a tripod/monopod? Or do you plan on just free-handing it?

There is a still photography area here on dvinfo that you can post it on. :D

Great to hear that you are liking it for the most part. Would you say its worth the price?

I look forward to seeing more!

Hi Gabriel,

Thanks for the photo forum link. ;-) That is what I want.

>> Would you say its worth the price?

For my Nikon AF-S 18-200mm VR f3.5-5.6 G DX IF lens, I don't have a choice. The lens is in hot demand world wide. Usually lead time is around two months, if I am willing to buy from Japan. I am lucky to get that one while the shop has it in stock. The d40 camera body is not that expensive as it sound. Compare to high end canon compact camera, the price is just simply double. I can't complain that d40 on price. DSLR is all about lens. I think that I will not buy other lens as the lens price can go sky rocket. BTW I don't want to be a lens collector. My lens is one year world wide warranty.

And dslr camera body will drop price like computer stuff, but the lens will keep the price for years.

As I mentioned before, D40 is multi language ready which means you can buy from any place you like. The only issue is about warranty. My gs400 is Japanese menu, so I usually don't change the menu item even I want to. It is a pleasure to use d40 menu item.

For tripod part, I do bring a light tripod with me. But I found tripod is too restrictive. I have to compromise about the camera position to take a photo. I don't like tripod. I mostly handheld the d40 and take shots. Do you find any hand shaking blur in the image? All these images posted shot by d40 were shot without tripod.

Hi Gabriel,

Here is the thread I started to post images shot by my d40 camera.

I used to believe manual is the king. I spend endless time tweak gs400 to shoot photos. But now I got d40 and I don't need to do anything extra. Just shoot in p mode and the nice color photo pop up. ;-) I only need to do small amounts of color adjustment in post editing.

One down side of d40 is that reverse mount 50mm slr lens in front of the d40 lens to get macro shot the enlargement ratio is not as big as gs400.

Leigh

Glad to hear that you are enjoying it!

That is interesting... And a bummer.

Thanks for posting the link to the new thread here!
