MX-500 - A beginners question on audio level

I have just purchased an MX-500, and when I play back a recording on my TV, I have to turn the volume way up from the normal level, to hear any recorded sounds.

I have tried experimenting with the recording level on the camera, by switching off auto and manually increasing the gain to maxium, with /without agc, and there is only a slight increase in the volume when played back on the TV.

I have also used Studio 8 to record a short clip to CD in SVDC format and played it back in a DVD player, the volume still has to be turned right up on the TV.

Likewise I can only get sound from the internal camera speaker if it is turned up to maximum.

Does this imply the camera has a fault, or have I missed something obvious ?

Thanks

Andy

What kind of mic are you using?

Have you tested the mic on another recorder?

Is there a dB pad on the mic?

Does the mic require phantom power?

Are you sure you are getting phantom power to the mic?

Have you switched cables to see if there is a cable problem?

When you hook up the cam to TV for playback, you should not hear any sound from the cam but the TV. There's no sound from the TV?

Only a slight increase in sound (on TV when the footage was shot with volume turned up)? The TV volume was turned up?

Doug / Frank, thanks for your responses.

I still get sound from the camcorder when it is connected to the TV for playback, should this happen ? To get any sound from the TV during playback, I have to turn the TV volume right up from its normal levels.

I am using the internal camcorder microphone, and get the same problem if I record with auto level, or manual and gain set to 0 or maximum.

If I connect headphones to the camcorder instead of the adio/video lead for the TV, then the sound level is o.k.

"I still get sound from the camcorder when it is connected to the TV for playback"

If you get sound from the cam's audio, that's strange. None of my cams do this while connected to a TV or VCR during playing back. Let me go and see what it says in the MX500 manual.

From with the rest of what you discribe, it sounds like your cam has a problem.
