DVX100 for film to video transfers
 

I transfer a lot of 8mm home movie film to video, and I have also done some silent 16mm. I can handle these without flicker since I use 20 fps projectors.

Recently, I've had a couple of requests to transfer 16mm sound film (there were no copyright issues). Of course, the sound keeps me from varying the projector speed.

Would the DVX100 in 24P mode be a good choice for this? Are there any $500 cost range NLEs (PC platform) I could use to edit this footage? Output is NTSC DVD or VHS tape.

If you could get sync between projector and camera, you could have 1-1 transfer...not sure how.

Vegas 4.0c is a great under $500 NLE that fully supports the DVX100. Check the 24p Vegas whitepaper at the top of the forum. It talks alot about how 24p works in the camera.

I don't think it's necessary to have 1:1 sync, based on what I see with the transfers done on 8mm. The transfer device runs at 20fps which is an even fraction of the 30 fps NTSC video rate. If one looks at the video captured with a NTSC camcorder, there will be frequent blended frames. (I use a shutter speed of 1/60)

I'm not sure what the effect would be of trying to capture with a device that is running at exactly the same speed but not sync'ed. It would be interesting to hear from someone who has actually used the DVX100 for this function.

Yeah, my pointy about sync was that if you could get 1:1, then let the cam apply pulldown, it would very close to professional telecine and excellent quality. But I think that kind of sync is only possible via firewire on the camera and projecter don't talk firewire :)
