Audio

Is it better to leave the audio on manual or auto with out a extra mic??? I leave mine on manual and adjust it whenever i need to.

Adrian Douglas November 17th, 2003 10:14 AM

It's all going to depend on how 'controlled' your source is going to be. If you know your source is going to be fairly stable and you are onnly going to have to make minor adjustments then manual is the best, but if you can't be sure then auto can react quicker that you can if need be and possible save you shot.

solid audio solution

I use a Tascam DA-P1 Portable DAT Recorder for all of my shoots now and sync up everything in post. It's not too heavy or arkward and fits easily into various carrying cases. It's like having a portable recording studio with you. This is it ...

Is there auto level control on the DVX100?

Mikel: Are there any sync problems with the DAT Recorder and recording in 24P?

Mikel Low November 24th, 2003 06:55 PM

sync

None that I'm aware of at this time. With the new project that I'm working though all of the post audio work is being done by audio specialists. I send them the video segment edits on an external harddrive and the DAT with markers on the audio that correspond with the video. They in turn sync it all up in a fully equipped lab. I've never done any post with the DAT at home as I do not have the proper facilities just yet.

There is no auto audio level mode on the DVX100, it's manual only. There is a compressor however, that compresses when the signal enters the last few db of range. That's the ALC, I use it 99% of the time.

In my experience, the ALC on the DVX works very well.

i work with alot of 5.1 surround projects in house and outsourced to us for processing.

I use berringer truthsfor my main audio stereo pair which i then move to a custom built 5.1 set and i have to see of ALL the footage that i have received, (BetaSP, canon, sony etc etc) the DVX is the nicest sounding of the light, with clean bass, high end distortion free peaks and a VERY VERY nice midrange.

IM VERY pleased with the DVX sounds when i use it myself, i use the standard pana shotgun with mine, then swith to the internal stereo mics when im doing venues, sports etc
