Overscan area and mic in shot
 

I recently used my relatively new DVX100 to shoot footage of a team build day - climbing ropes, logs etc. It was chucking it down and I had a brand new, never before used Portabrace rain cover fitted (very nice bit of kit) and an ME66 with mini long haired softee mounted in the hot shoe.

I was very careful (or so I thought!) to check both the rain covers lens hood and the mic were not in shot - but being a novice with the DVX100 and being used to normally having a production monitor with me set to underscan mode fed from a JVC DV550, didn't realise the extent of overscan on the LCD display (did I get over/under in the right order?).

Result - you guessed it - both mic and a corner of the lens hood in shot (albeit in the under scan area). Lesson learned - the hard way!

Now, as this footage will end up on DVD, would you guys be tempted to crop the image (and loose some quality) - or leave it as is?

Since most DVD's will be played on a TV I would leave it as is. If
you wan't you could add little black bars on top of the offending
areas (do this CONSISTENTLY throughout the whole movie) and
if they show up when watching people won't notice it at all.

Ah, nice point - black bars are obviously better than cropping and thus scaling the image :)
