DVX100 and the MixPre
 

Hi all. Because of what I've read in current threads on the audio boards (and a search of the same) I've decided to go with the MixPre to monitor my levels and be able to boost my field audio w/o increasing the camera noise (if the levels are low). But Marco (on the audio board) mentions a DV Mag. article on the MixPre where it says that the gain on a camera should be turned down so that a 0dB tone on the MixPre reads -20dB on the camera itself. Given that the audio on the DVX is noteably better than other cameras, and the DVX isn't specifically mentioned, is this adjustment nec. with the DVX as well?

One other thing, and I apologize in advance for my ignorance (but I'm learning!), whereas I use "mic in" when sending the signal into the DVX directly, if its coming via the MixPre I use "line in" instead, correct? Seems like that was the only "out" option with the MixPre anyway.

yup.. i run it as line in if im connecting to a board... but i use the sennheiser 112 radio mics, so it doesnt really matter as i can adjsut gainon the recievers as well as the DVX itself..

i dont use a pre amp.. i monitor all audio during filming and run the AGC all the time.. (for event) if its controlled i dont use it.

i then master all audio in post, its cheaper, faster (IMO) and allowes less intrusion in the actual filming work.

Peter, so you've never had an issue with boosting low audio levels with the gain of the DVX and hearing a noticeable "noise" increase as a result (motor, etc.)? That's my biggest concern, esp. with a couple scenarios where I'm dubious about the levels I'm going to get (particularly a Q and A with an audience). Jay Rose's book mentions that boosting it at the mixer doesn't result in the same effect. Plus I thought an extra set of "dummy lights" (the meters on the PreMix) for me to notice wouldn't hurt. But I'd be happy to not spend the $650 if it isn't going to make a significant difference. Wasn't looking forward to one more thing (plus cables, etc.) hanging on me while doing run and gun anyway. Just trying to take audio as seriously as I can within my contraints.
