DVC80, DVC30, & CinemaGamma?

Looking at the Panasonic page for the DVC30, it says it comes with "CinemaGamma" software -- is this built into the camera or is it actual software? (I'm confused since it's listed as a "software" for the DVX100 as well.) Anyone know what that is, or how it works? Any experience at all with it? Does it mimic that CinemaGamma feature inherent on the DVX100?

Also, since the DVC80 is no longer listed on the Panasonic site, does anyone know if it has the CinemaGamma software as well?

The only reason I ask is that the thing I like about the most about the DVX100 is the Cinema settings. The 24p is not as big a deal. I can use software for that (although I'm aware of the loss of resolution). But I can't seem to mimic the Cinema settings to my liking.

I'm a little confused, and I've read enough to just confuse myself further. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

yes, the dvc30 has built in cinegamma, no the dvc80 does not. no external software.

I ordered a DVC30 today from Profeel for $1,977.95. Should be here next Wed. I'll post something on CinemaGamma setting as soon as I figure out how everything works.

Its definitely internal software/hardware and along with the DVC30 the Japanese NV-GS100 also has this cine-like gamma mode. Of course neither the GS100 or DVC30 have adjustable gamma settings like that of the DVX100/DVX100A.

The DVC80 lacks any cine-like gamma modes and also does not have frame mode or progressive scan.

I know it's a bit early, but does anyone where I might be able to see any stills or any clips of the DVC30 shot in cine-like mode? (Sorry for the millions of my questions -- I really appreciate all y'all's helps and pointers.)

I have yet to find any frames or clips of the DVC30 other than this one odd link and it links to a Japanese site with small pictures that may or may not have originated on a DVC30.

Hi,

Yes, it is taken by AG-DVC30 with 30P/Cinelike gamma. (May I ask why odd?)

Maybe I can post some other shots for you folks to see. Please give me a few days.

Odd in that you wouldn't expect to find DVC30 information there but appreciated all the same.

BTW - that little picture is of a Sony PDX10.

IC

I was using PDX10 for last year since Panasonic cams were not well implementing anamorphic. So my icon for Video/Creative entry is PDX10. I'm liking the control and 30p capability on AG30 now, so soon I will switch more towards to Panasonic cams. Like yourself, I purchased the GS100k (black) and it should arrive tomorrow. How is the anamorphic mode on GS100k?

I strictly shoot in widescreen and Pro Cinema on the GS100 and I'm a big fan. Of course I would rather have 1/3" or 1/4" CCDs but for the price its great. My last cam was a PDX10 and I want to consider the DVC30 but the lack of a quality 16:9 mode has discouraged me.

This is a Pro Cinema frame (unaltered other than JPG compression) of my daughter.

Congratulations on finding a GS100 (especially a black one). I see that Pansonic Japan has started pushing it out the door on their website.

NASA has chosen the GS100 as their next rover camera.. (j/k)

I, too, shoot only in 16:9 mode. I get really discouraged with 4:3. Since I shoot mostly music performance and extreme sport events, PDX10's clumsy zoom control have given me the frustration. PDX10 is okay if you use extrenal lanc controller with tripod, or not using zoom at all when it is on my Glidecam. So, I will keep one PDX10 for the better 16:9 shooting. You are right about the quality on 16:9 with AG30, but since it does take 30p, which the resolution is twice as high as interlace, the picture look acceptable. I will post the still and the short movie on my web site for you to look at after my deadline for magazine article.

Thank you for showing me the captures. They look beautiful.

For further referece, I'm sure you have come across to this page but just in case you did not.

Oh, what is your guess on 16:9 quality on NV-GS400?

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the cine gamma on the ag-dvc30 is the same as on the DVX100? I read that it cannot be adjusted like the DVX, but can it look similar? Have people shot with both the 30 and the DVX to see how close the gamma settings look? Sorry for all the questions, but I haven't been able to find much info about this.

I'm thinking about getting a dvc30, because I can't afford a DVX, and it looks like a good cheaper alternative. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Dave.

Hi Dave,

DVC30 can let you adjust parameters like detail level/chroma level/color temp/master ped/ae shift/skin tone dtl/rec mode.

So, actually, DVC's cine-like is in the general scene file and the file is adjustable preset, and detail level is down to -3, chroma level is set up to +4, AE shift is set to -3 and rec mode being "frame". Maybe little diffrent from DVX100?

posted the shots...

I posted the still from NV-GS100 and AG-DVC30 both in movie-like mode (Squeeze Wide).

Wow Kaku, those are some great shots demonstrating the difference in widescreen mode between the GS100 and DVC30.

That pretty much rules out a DVC30 upgrade for me since I shoot stricly 16:9.

A million thanks!
