Recording to my powerbook
 

Ok I'm trying to record from my DVX100A direct to my powerbook. Is this possible and do I need a tape in to do it?

i always wanted to know the answer to this question. i am 90% sure you can do it.

Got it!

Went into log and capture, then settings and put device control to non-controllable or similar. Then hit capture now and you're all set.

Seemed to capture OT 1 of Stanley Cup perfect.

You might also have a look at BTV Pro. It's an inexpensive shareware application that can capture and display video on your Mac via firewire. I find it useful as a field monitor sometimes. Of course it isn't really a substitute for an NTSC monitor as the colorspace is different, but it's very helpful for showing the full frame and making focus judgements.

One nice thing is that you have full control over the image size and proportions and can use full screen mode where the menus and windows go away. I use it with my PDX-10 while shooting 16:9 since you can set the frame size to display anamorphic widescreen correctly. I'd think that might be handy on the DVX-100a since I've heard the viewfinder won't show anamorphic video in the correct proportion.

Anyway, it's worth trying the free download and well worth the $40 shareware fee if you find it useful.
