Using the DVX-100A 4-Documentary
 

Just bought a new DVX-100A...also new to digital video and filmmaking. Just curious if anyone out there is using the DVX-100A for documentary shooting. I don't want to spend thousands on buying useless accessories and adapters that I don't need for documentary. Any suggestions on a good set-up? Which mics, adapters...etc. By the way...this community is great! A lot of valuable information.

I think the one purchase that's worth making is upgrading on a mic. I went with the Audio Technica shotgun because it can be powered by a battery and not phantom, but those were the old XL-1 days. I also found getting two mics can help but depends what you're shooting. What really helped me once was having someone else focus on getting audio from a moving subject, while I could focus on the shot and not worry how close the camera mic was to the person speaking. I didn't want to mic this person but still needed to hear him clearly.

Sennheiser makes good shotguns.

I am not really fond of a shoulder mount, no reason just never really needed it.

Sennheiser also makes very good wireless mics which is essential for alot of interviews. A variable zoom controller is also something to consider...super slow zooms without touching/jarring the camera.
