How do you edit this?

My understanding is that a false frame is created to make the 29.97fps that NTSC requires (and current mini DV decks). I've read that only Apple with their comination of Final Cut Pro and Cinema Tools ($2,000) support editing with this camera in 24p. I am assuming the high end Avids will also. But I'm told that no one else has announced support (low end) for editing the video. Has any one else heard anything?

Hi Jeff,

FWIW here is some related info (a couple of posts in) at:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3202

As you may already be aware, you *can* edit the 24p captured footage straight out of the camera at 29.97fps (with pulldown) - either ignoring the cadence or taking custom steps to preserve it.

But to edit at 24fps, the catch would seem to be having the NLE or other utility intelligently capture the footage either sans the 'fake frame' or remove the standard pulldown on the fly without destructively recompressing the footage.

(Putting presumption hat on...) As you mention I think some of the higher end Avids are capable of this and FCP is probably next in line, but for the moment I'm guessing one would either have to use a higher end capture card (ie - Cinewave, Aurora, Kona?) with 3:2 pulldown removal or a utility like the recently announced update to DVFilm Maker. (Noted in earler thread: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3800) The catch is it looks like you need to capture the footage 'normally' and then process it thru to a new 23.98/24fps copy. (An extra step, but apparently does so without compressing.)

perpetually pontificating... ; )
Clayton
