CAvision Matte box

Has anyone used the CAVision Matte box for the DVX-100a? I was thinking of buying one because of the price difference. Thanks.

I personally use the 3 X 3 and love it and have had ZERO issues with it. ONe thing with the 3 X 3 is of using a Rotating Stage (as if for a Polorizer) the onboard mic of the DVX gets in the way; you have to insert the Filter from the bottom and then you only have X Amount of turning radius.

This is exclusive only to the 3 X 3 as far as I know and exclusive to a Filter or shot that warrants rotation. I have NEVER had a situation that required roatation of the polorizer filter or a Grad for that matter. My main set up is an ND Grad for Exterior shooting and it works wonderfully. I do not have the Rods nor Pistol Grip options that come with it and the RODS for the 3 X 3 will not accomodate a Follow Focus unit FYI.

If it's in your budget go for the 4 X 4. IF not, I think you would be happy with the 3 X 3 especially considering the price point. I am very pleased with it's consruction and lightweight design.

Gregory,

I haven't worked with the Cavision. But I would also STRONGLY recommend that you invest in 4X4 instead of 3x3. 4X4 compatibility and filter set will be much more versatile than 3X3. While the 3X3 mattebox may be a perfect fit for the current crop of DV cameras, the 4X4 will be much more adaptable to larger lenses and cameras in the future.

Furthermore, according to Stan Wallace at The Filter Gallery here in New York, Tiffen (among others) has ceased production on 3X3 filters. While there are certainly plenty of 3X3's in stock at various dealers, they will eventually die out.
