is 6db gain on dvx100b "clean"?

is 6db gain on dvx100b "clean"?

i have a shoot coming up where the speaker will be in a living room setting.

the client has been asked me to use a minimal amount of lighting instruments.

i have some ideas how to shoot this with my dvx100b.

(small chimera 650 + lowel pro + inkie all bounced to ceiling)

the footage is going to the web so the dvx100b is the "fastest" 1/3chip camera available to me.

but just in case i need more light, is 6db gain on dvx100b "clean"?

thanks in advance to those in the know.

be well

Rob,
If you're bouncing the lights, you might want to remove the Chimera from the 650; it's just eating up light you can use for exposure. To use the full zoom range of your camera, you will need a 2.8 exposure (the zoom stops down at the long end, and you will see a definite change in exposure if you zoom in while wide open to 1.6).
6db is about 1 stop of gain. It can look fine, depending on the scene. If you have larger, low contrast areas (like an even toned wall) as part of the scene, noise will show up there first. Try 3db, if that doesn't get you all the way there...go to 6db.
If the scene already has good contrast you will likely be ok.

Hope this helps.

ken-

thanks for sharing your thoughts.

i agree w/the chimera but might also use it not to bounce.

but i do appreciate the thought.

as for adding gain, i didn't know the dvx100b has the option to change amount of gain.

i thought it is only: 0 - +6 - +12

if i am wrong, perhaps you can let me know how to engage the option to change the gain amounts.

again, thanks for adding to the conversation.

be well

Go the menu>SW Mode screen. First items on the list are the gain settings. I normally leave mine at +3, and +6 for the mid and high settings.Changeable at will.
Hope this helps,
Ken
