What size is the dvx letterbox?

Is the dvx letterbox 1.66:1 or 1.76.1?
Which of those two sizes is the average widescreen tv?

Boyd Ostroff November 27th, 2005 07:13 PM

I'm not familiar with the exact implementation ont the DVX, but 16/9 = 1.78

Do the math.... typical pixel dimensions of different flavors of widescreen TV's

1920x1080 = 1.78:1
1367x768 = 1.78:1
1280x720 = 1.78:1
854x480 - 1.78:1

But unfortunately every consumer widescreen TV that I've seen overscans, so the entire image isn't seen; you lose a little around the edges of the image. Also, 4:3 video pixels are not square so in terms of the camera's sensor, cropping to 720x360 will give you a 16:9 letterboxed image.

Thanks a lot, my bad for not knowing

Barry Green November 28th, 2005 02:25 AM

It is approximately 1.72:1, based on the idea that each letterbox bar is 58 pixels tall. It's supposed to be 16:9, but it seems like the image is just a pixel or two taller than 16:9.

Thanks so much barry! I just wanted to know so I could mask my lcd screen appropriately.

Barry Green November 28th, 2005 04:11 AM

DVInfo.net sponsor EVS sells some pre-made LCD masks, I think they're called ScreenSkins or something like that...

Ken Plotin November 28th, 2005 10:59 AM

They are , indeed, called Screen Skins. They're available in 16x9, 1:85 and 2:35 masks. EVS sells them (ask for Rush).
You could make your own, but at less than $5 for a pack of 2 that can be re-used many,many times, why bother? Whatever you do, don't use tape on your LCD scren... the adhesives vary widely and can leave some nasty residue.
Hope this helps.
