Mattebox/filterholder & filter for dvc30
 

It looks like I'm "stuck" with the dvc30 for a while and found out that i shall invest in a few filters.

I primarely shoot outdoors extremesports, Freeride/downhill cycle. The plan for the summer is more scenic shots as the Nature here i Norway is great, the Fjords in the West and Lofoten i North, with midnight sun just to mention some of it. The only downside is the weather, which is more unstable and the showers more sudden than...verything, rainslicker is needed just to move outside.

So far i found out i need a few ND filtets to control the light, and maybe some graduated ones for creative use. Any suggestions?

The problem number two, screw-in filters or 4x4/3x3 and again filter holder or mattebox? I'm using the century 58mm wide angle lens as well with steprings, this is a fairly heavy setup and i'm not shure i can attach a mattebox to this without support rods?
And is a mattebox needed at all, so expensive..? Or will for example centry's sunshade/filter holder that accepts 4x4/3x3 filters do?

Any suggestions or advice regarding setup?

You'll need support rods, I have a 1.7x tele adaptor on my dvc30 with stepup rings and tried to fit a mamyia hood ( 72 mm metal beast ). I didn't like the front weight and a hood isn't as heavy as a matte box with filter holder.

You might get away with a cokin P system or similar for filters, it's rather deep especially with stepup rings and might work for what you want. I found that cheap card board matte black gobos work very well but I'm not doing senics.

BTW "STUCK"? with the dv30? come on it's a nice cam, only the hvx is really better

The case is me using the wide angle lens and i'm getting i telelconverter to. I need some sort of lenshood/sunshade as 90% as shoot outdoors. A mattebox is the ideal thing, but to dam expensive at the moment. The clamp-on ones is within the budget, but i'm not too shure about the weight.

I'm not stuck in a negative way, but the dvc has its cons....sort of..
-not the best in bad light, but not bad either
-lac og interval rec
-no manual nd filter
-separate zoom and focus rings
But, add those features and you could by a dvx100 instead(not the b one, missing interval rev). But for it's size it produces a great picture, as guys at the editingroom at some events commented and they had acces to both dvx100, dvcam and digibeta. Ofcourse the digibeta did make som outstanding shots and it was very very clear that is NOT was dv, but comparing digibeta with dv....almost stupid:)

I don't have any experience with the DVC-30 but I do have Century's filter holder/lens shade for my Z1 with Century lenses. It's very lightweight and well made. I'm only using it as a shade however and haven't bought any filters (they get pretty expensive :-) Here are a few photos:

Compared to a mattebox, the filters can't rotate and you can only use one at a time. This might be an issue if you want to use graduated filters I suppose. Of course it costs much less than a mattebox though...

The DS-FH44 one from century is a alternative, i'm not shure i will add inn the graduated ones or not yet. The DS-FH44 takes two 4x4 filters acording to bhp and century. One reason i was keen to use either 4x4/3x3 filters, regardsless of nd/graduated etc. are the ability to use them on more than one camera or if i buy a new cam.

Cavision has a few clamp-on's that weigh about 300g, i'm not shure about the weight on the DS-FH44 from century. Rotation would ofcourse enable the use of graduated filters. The cavision website list rods as accessories for the smallest 3x3 simple matteboxes/filterholders.
I'll email bhp about the century's weight and rods for cavision and se what the come up with.
