What to get, how to grow.
 

Hello to all.
I am somewhat in a dilema... I am in need of a second camera for my documentaries and short films.

I have a DVC-30, wide and tele lenses, matte box, tiffen glass filters etc. and need "another" camera.

How do I aproach this..? Should I get another DVC-30..? this would mean the best match in post, same resolution... same colors.

Should I get a DVX-100B..? This would mean better 1st camera, moving to newer equipment... but more problems matching the cameras in post.

More expenses getting wide / tele lenses for the 100B...

What do you suggest..?

If you don't get two of the same camera, you will definitely have problems matching the video. If you have the money, get another DVC30, it will make life a lot easier.

I think Edward Carlson has good advice. I would buy another DVC30 if you need another camera. Is there really that much difference between a DVC30 and a DVX100 anyway besides the 24p mode? Which you wouldn't be able to use anyway if you were also using the DVC30?

Well, the DVX gives you quite a bit over the DVC beyond just 24p. Larger CCDs, widescreen capability, separate controls for zoom and focus, better audio system, and much more control over your image - just as a start.

Having said that, the question is what are you going to do with the second camera? If it's going to be used for a separate unit that goes out to get "B-roll" shots, then a DVX-100 would give you more camera for your A unit. If you want two cameras to roll on the same subject and intercut between them, then I'd say go with another DVC30.

If you want both cameras to be rolling at the same time, then most of the accessories are going to be needed for both cameras at the same time. There might not be much savings in reusing accessories.

I think the DVX is a substantially better camera, which it should be given the price differential.

Yes, the DVX100 is much better. For your case I would go with another DVC30 for your best bang for the buck and also to keep your video on par. If interested I have one for sale. PM or e-mail for details since I'm not allowed to post in the classified yet. Which ever way you go best of luck!
