GH4 4K strobing in viewfinder.

I decided to try out this 4K recording with my GH4 and see the image strobing in the viewfinder and flip out screen.
No problem when recording 1920x1080 50p at 50 mbps

I must have a setting wrong some were, I tried different shutter speeds but made no difference, any ideas and thanks.

Re: GH4 4K strobing in viewfinder.

are you shooting under flourescent lighting Anthony ? Is the strobing on the recorded footage or just the VF and LCD.
Panning to fast can cause strobing. Google it, there may be something out there that can help you. It is an issue that appears to be quite common with the GH4

Hello Colin, yes, fluorescent lighting and strobing in the VF & LCD without recording.
I can understand it if I was panning very fast but I'm not.
As I said no problem when not recording 4K.

I'll wait for others recording 4K with the GH4 to give their opinion.
I thought I was on the wrong shutter speed.
I had a look on youtube and I changed the setting to 4K so I can understand it :)

Thanks Colin.

Re: GH4 4K strobing in viewfinder.

what mode are you in ?
Go manual and shoot something under the fluorescent lighting, set your shutter speed to 50. There will be no flickering. go to 60 and above and there will be flicker. If you shoot in ia, P or A mode and you will likely get flicker, the camera is setting the shutter speed for you, and getting it wrong for shooting under fluorescent lighting. Try shooting in S mode, set it to 50 and you wont have a problem. Its the same with all cameras under fluorescent's. Its all to do with the Hz. We run on 50Hz

Re: GH4 4K strobing in viewfinder.

I'm making this more difficult than it is :)

Camera set to M+ camera (Creative Video Mode)
Shutter speed 50.
Record Format MOV
Rec Quality 4K 100m 25p
This still is strobing in VF and LCD :)

Re: GH4 4K strobing in viewfinder.

Hi Anthony

This is weird!! I shot a wedding a few weeks ago and the venue had dimmed ceiling lights and where the lights backlit the wall I got flicker ...if I stayed away from the wall I had no issue. I tried our kitchen a few weeks ago and yes the EVF flickered! Now this evening I tried 1080 25P, 1080 50P, 4K 24P and 4K 25P and not a flicker at all under the light !! That was at 1/50th shutter. So I'm wondering why it flickered previously in 1080 25P??

Let us know if you discover anything????

Chris

Thanks Chris, that is strange, yes, will do.
Recording outside with the above settings and still getting a bit of flicker/strobing.

Thanks.

Re: GH4 4K strobing in viewfinder.

Hi Anthony

My Panny's only have AVCHD and MP4 and apart from the one wedding venue there is no flicker ever in any of the modes at any shutter speed. From 1080 25P right up to 4K 25P but I only have MP4 at 100mbps in that mode! Does the GH4 have an MP4 option for 4K??

What I would suggest is pop a post in the wedding and events forum as Noa Put visits there all the time and I know he shoots 4K on his GH4 at weddings .. I'm sure he will have an answer for you!

Yes, as far as I know it has. I will try that,...just did and it still shows strobing :(

I will post in the other forum.

No flicker problems when I'm recording MOV 1920x1080 50Mbps 50p

Thank you.

Re: GH4 4K strobing in viewfinder.

I must have 3 faulty cameras guys. I have tried my FZ1000, LX7 and LX100. All strobe under flourescent lighting at shutter speeds above 50. Mind this is not unexpected, it is a well documented issue.
