No variable frame rate for 2100 and 3000?
 

I'm wondering if the variable frame rate is supported with 2100 and 3000 or not.

In HVX200 and HPX500, it is clearly mentioned in the feature list but not in 2100 and 3000's.

I assume the 2100 is the Japan version of what we know as the 2000? Assuming it is, you are correct, no VFR on either. I know, stupid. Why have it on the cheap cameras but not the expensive ones?

I guess HVX200 and HPX555 were limited with the resolution, so they let us use the VFR. So, their plan is to update the varicam.
Instead of coming from top, like me, coming from bottom, it is natural to seek for considering the model above for upgrading my rig, but varicam range would be not anything we can afford.

Panasonic has to do something against RED though.

I would almost bet in the next few years, Sony or Panasonic will introduce a 2k or 4k camera that will be affordable to compete. 2k seems like the next logical step (well, maybe after 1080 60p?). I wouldn't be at all surprised if Panisonic came out with a camera that up-reses internally to 2k or 4k. They do it with their sensors now, what's to stop them in a few years when sensors come down in price? I'd buy it.

So what in the world happened to JVC? I mean, I know they have their HD110, 200 & 250, but why have they not come out with a full size HD ENG camera like everyone else? I wonder if they ever will? They used to make some very nice full size cameras. I sure hope they go back to that at some point. I would probably look into those too.

That's correct, only the 200 and 500 support VFR. Right now there is no true Varicam replacement in the P2 lineup but I imagine that's just around the corner.

JVC is going through a merger with Kenwood. They only had two booth worth of display at InterBEE. I hope the best for them to put together their business again, though. Also, I talked to one person at JVC once and he said they are concentrating on 1/3" CCD.

I'm going to help a major feature film this year, so kind of marketing for shooting 2K or 4K. Do you think next varicam would be at least 2K?

I'm no longer a Panny insider so I don't know, but I think it highly doubtful since shooting VFR at those high bitrates would require a very expensive processor in the camera.

If you need to shoot uncompressed at those resolutions you should be considering the Thomson Viper which has great support both on PC and Mac side or even RED since that's the exact market RED was designed for.
