Is it likely that Panasonic never gets on HDV?

Panasonic is not a member of the HDV standard, but that doesn't mean they won't go to a prosumer HD format.
Do you guys think (and this is by no means true - just pretend) that they may go for a non tape HD format? Remember that they are after the P2 card format used in the SDX800 24p DVCPRO, and perhaps they develop a cheaper card.

Or perhaps another tape format that is not backward compatible with DV?

What is obvious is that they someday will go HD for consumer and prosumer because SD will die in this decade.

I do think Panasonic will make a HD camcorder that records to P2. It makes total sense for them to do so. Tape is oh so 20th Century... The price on P2 will also begin to fall exponentially soon.

They showed a prototype consumer HD P2 camera at last NAB, didn't they? That camera that looked like a Super 8 camera?

REally? I didn't know they showed an HD P2 prototype. That sounds very interesting.

This is from InterBEE or something like that. It's quite recent. You'll have to scroll down quite a bit to see the Panasonic P2:s with that super-8 look. Oh, and Babelfish gives interesting results for the second P2 camera.

For what it's worth, these photos from InterBEE which show two similar mockups -- one labeled DVCPro HD and the other HD-MPEG appear to be the same that were shown at NAB2004, but labeled DVCPro HD and DVCPro 50.

But that could be that camera. Since panasonic is not part of the HDV group and if they try to release some palmcorder I wonder if they will go the way of beta?

Remember the what is best VHS or beta?

Jan, the Panny rep already said the camera is not going to look like the mockup.

But I bet it is close to that picture. I've seen about 3 pics and they are all about the same. Without tape it will not have to be to big.

I think they'll change it because so many people didn't like it. Even people like me who own the DVX thought it looked like a toy.

Like one of those old Fischer Price cameras.

So, that's where she came on a thread and said that the camera doesn't look like that and that it was just a mockup to show something.

It was a cheap looking thing. I hope they change it too.
