4-channel audio recording

Anyone tried doing four-channel audio recording on the HVX and getting all the channels at proper level? I have been shooting with the two on-camera channels as backup on channels 3-4, a long shotgun on channel 1 and a Lectronics lavalier on channel 2. I may be missing something in the documentation, but I can only get levels set on whatever is on channels 1-2. Any suggestions to get all four balanced?

Don't think you can ...

Bill,

I think that once the on-board mic is relegated to channels 3 & 4 it's pretty much on automatic. For me I've had channels 1 & 2 assigned to to my Shure FP-33 feed (and assigned to channels 1 & 2 on the HVX) and I haven't found a way to dynamically adjust channels 3 & 4.

Just had a thought ... I've been using the direct to FCP via my PowerBook workflow. There may be away to boost the gain on those channels via that method using the capture tool. I'm just going off a vague recollection though so I can't testify to it.

Anyway, I haven't discovered a way to control channels 3 and 4 on the camera itself when using channels 1 & 2 set to offboard gear.

Let me know if you do!

Channels 3 & 4 are set at a constant input level, not automatic. It's equivalent to if you set the audio potentiometers to top-dead-center.

Bill -

If you have an outboard preamp, your best bet is to put the internal mics on CH 1 and 2, and use the external preamp to feed channels 3 and 4 at LINE LEVEL through the XLRs, and adjust 'em with the preamp. You can switch CH 3 and 4 with 1 and 2 during testing so you can see the meters to "calibrate" the outboard preamp...

is a field audio mixer necessary for the hvx?
