HVX with Marshall HD monitor
 

Hey folks, just wondering if anyone else has this monitor and noticed the line on the left side, on the very edge of the screen. I've seen it on 2 monitors exactly the same, and tried 2 different HVX's and gotten it. From looking at the flip-out monitor, it seems as though the Marshall is showing a kind of "underscan". Maybe this is the way they are all built or something, but the line isn't on the right side and the image actually gets a little lighter just to the right of the line (which you cannot see in these pics very well)

I'll have to look for the line next time I fire mine up. Mine sure flickers allot though. Don't know if that's normal or not for thismonitor.

Regarding the line on the left, mine does this too. It doesn't bother me much. Regarding flickering, I don't see any flickering.

How are you guys liking this monitor?
How accurate is the color & contrast?
Are you mounting it on the camera itself?

Is it big enough to really evaluate the HD image or do you also need a 17" or larger on the set.

Hey Steev, so it must be something that all of them do, the way the LCD display is mounted in the chassis is a little "off". Marshall could be a little more precise with a $1,300 7" monitor, but then again, it IS an HD monitor that you can focus with and judge colors by...for only $1,300...

I like the monitor, it doesn't flicker, but it auto detects the signal (resolution being fed into it) and that may be what some people are seeing, this should go away after initial boot up/plug in. Also the component D plug has very small contacts on it and if they are dirty, this could cause the monitor to get a scratchy signal, hence the flickering.

It's been a *must* with a 35mm imager, and very handy as cross reference aside from the built-in LCD on the HVX.

It's bright, and you can adjust the color and contrast to taste. You'll find that its off-axis image accuracy shift is something you may battle with. I just adjust the monitor angle/height or adjust my position to see properly.

I've had this attached on the hot shoe, with battery clipped to pants, as well as mount/35mm imager/rails/35mm lens on the HVX200, and it all gets pretty damn heavy, but I can get shots with it, running about 4-5 minutes until I need a muscle break. (Note: And I'm talking hand held here. Tripod mounted is easy).

It's plenty big. I can get a good sense of composition from about 5-6 feet away. For focusing, you need it to be within a few feet.

Whether it replaces a 17" monitor on set is up to your standards and requirements.

I have mine mounted off a small aluminum bracket and swivel head, into the rear threaded hole on the handle. It does get heavy as Steev mentioned, but can hand hold for a bit. I am powering off an external 12v battery and cabling to the battery (just like film style shooting, so an assistant is needed for this)

I like the picture a lot on the monitor, well, except for the stuff mentioned in this thread that I started :)

After some research about the Marshall/HVX combination and a conversation with Rob at Nebtek I found out a few things;

It seems that there is a software upgrade from Marshall to correct the white vertical line problem, and a firmware upgrade that will fix the "stutter" issue discussed here:

However, if you go this route, your monitor will work fine with the HVX, but have interoperability problems with other cameras forevermore. Can anyone who has had the firmware upgrade confirm or debunk this?
