1080i 24PA import into FCP problems
 

Hey all--I'm working on a project on which we are shooting 1080i 24P advanced, with the intention of importing this footage into FCP, having it ignore the extra stutter frames, and thereby recovering the original 24 progressive frames.

Final Cut does not have an option for a DVCProHD 1080 24fps project, so we selected 1080 24fps. When we use the Panasonic P2 import option, Final Cut does allow us the option to "ignore extra frames" which would seem to indicate that the additional stutter frames will be ignored.

We import the footage just fine, but when the clip shows up in the FCP bin, it shows that it is a 29.97 clip. Very strange.

If anyone has successfully used this workflow, any input would be greatly appreciated. We are running FCP 5.1 on a MacBook Pro (which absolutely screams, BTW). Amazingly, we are editing off a standard external firewire drive, using ONLY the FW400 port, and there is virtually no latency in editing. Amazing.

You have to use cinema tools to remove the extra frames.

I did the following:

1. Open Cinema Tools.
2. Open Clip.
3. Pick clip-reverse telecine

Capture mode :
F1-F2

File:
New (smaller)

Conform to:
23.98 w/ standard upper/lower

Fields:
AA
Style 1

Click ok and save new file.

This seems to be ok, I dont know if it is messing up audio or anything but it plays back in my progressive timeline.

Thanks for this Phil. It seems like FCP would have implemented a better method for importing this video, but I guess not. Once you've run it through CinemaTools, what project type do you create in FCP? 1080 24fps? Thanks!

Pick the default 1080i 60 timline and tweak to these settings:
Right click sequence settings (before you drop clips on to it)
HD 1280x1080 HD 16x9
Anamorphic 16:9 - unchecked
Editing timebase 23.98
Advanced Quicktime Video settings - 23.976
48Khz, 16bit default audio

Everything else should be fine...

FCP 5.1 and 1080 pa
 

Hey guys, I'm just wondering how feasible this process would be for someone working on a feature length project. We're basically trying to shoot a film at as high a resolution as is possible using the DVX200 and FCP 5.1 I'd love to be able to pull 1080 24PA, but this process sounds like it's going to requre logging every clip separately.

Is it worth it, or should we shoot 720 24p to keep things simpler? (or should we shoot 1080 60i and then use something like Magic Marker to convert it down to 24p?)

I'm a producer (super-low budget project) on this project trying to make an informed decision and any advice you had would be greatly appreciated.

Cinema tools has a batch convert option that works well for me.

I believe that the most current FCP can now do 1080 24pa. You do not have to go to cinema tools. Import footage and go to remove advanced pulldown from drop down menu.

Does not work, I have tried every combination. Using FCP 5.1. I know the footage is 1080 24pA. I also have Edius Broadcast and Raylight. I can also see the footage in the P2 viewer on my PC. 2:3:3:2 footage I still have to use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown. Edius will bring the .mxf file right in and removes the pulldown without converting. Wish FCP would do that. Please correct me if I am doing something wrong??

You know, all I did is suck in the data from P2 and chose the remove advanced pulldown out of the tools menu. I also noticed after (and haven't tried since) that there's a checkbox to do the same in the P2 import dialog.
