Frame Grabs from Feature: "No Exit" HVX-200/and M2 nikon glass

Just finished shooting another feature with the HVX/m2 combo this time we used the M2 90% of the time...

It was a thriller, we shot in New Orleans, had a 5 ton grip truck with a 600amp genie.

you can read more info on the movie at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0937233/

we had a great cast with Blanchard Ryan from "Open Water", and Edoardo Ballerini who's been in many tv shows and "Romeo must die"... I can't say enough

what pleasure it is to work with professional talent.

I have to get permission to show frame grabs so I'll be showing more over the next few weeks...

I was very happy with the set up this time I used every thing from a 8mm f/3.5 prime to a 70-300mm zoom with a 2x doubler...

I believe we are first in using the Lens babie 3G for a feature production. We used it for almost half the movie. It was a challenge because it's not

designed for motion picture work, but it was well worth it.

I'm cutting a teaser for my reel that I'll post when I can...

I am curious about your use of the Lens Babie 3G. I was thinking of getting one for use with my SGPro. Was it easy to attach to your M2, or did you attach it directly to the camera? Was it primarily used for still shots, or were able to pan or dolly with it? Just curious about its use in film.

Vincent Pascoe February 19th, 2007 01:48 PM

we static pan dolly and even HAND Held! I've been using the 2.0 on concerts and music videos since July of last year.

I used it on The AFI Concert thats on DVD in best buy right now...

you relly see it at the begging section of , Endlessly, She Said.

There was 24 camera Operators on that shoot, It was great because all of them wanted to know what the hell was at the end of my lens...

Vincent,

I've been on the verge of springing fopr the Lensbaby 3 for a while now, for use with M2 or Brevis, but I was concerned about whether the sweet spot would be big enough to use when the lens was pretty wide open.

What's your experience been?

Also have you used the wide angle and teleconverters for it?

- Lenny Levy

Vincent Pascoe February 20th, 2007 12:09 AM

yes we used the wide and telephoto adapters lots on this shoot..couldn't have done it with out them( half the movie would have been on just one focal length)

I've done lots of work for music videos at the F/2.0 but for this I lit 90% of it at a F/2.8 to help make a bigger sweet spot

for the Stunts I did light for a F/4.0 to help my first AC out...That can be challenging enough with an ASA of 160 after the adapter...

I really enjoyed havening yet another tool at my disposal I could use to tell the story through cinematography. I could have a CU shot on some one with a larger or smaller sweet Spot depending on the look I wanted.

That's great info Vincent.
Thanks.
I guess you've convinced me to bite the bullet and go for it.

Are the tele & wide adapters sharp enough?

Any stills to show that are Lensbaby shots?

Get to know my lenses... and Lensbabie 3g in Action

heres a grab from a dolly on the 3g with the wide angle adapter = about 30mm

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/160/3...237848fd5a.jpg

heres some other info about the lenses we used...

Nikon lenses

8mm f/3.5 peleng

Fish eye 180 degrees...vingetes on the sides but crazy cool

14mm f/2.8 Sigma

I love/ hate this lens because it is auto focus only and theres no clutch on the lens it just keeps spinning

28mm f/2.8 NIkon AF

wish I would have gotten a 2.0 manual instead, but very sharp.

35mm f/2.8

Have not found a 35mm lens that I can get edge to edge sharpness... I own 3!

50mm f/1.4 NIkor

usually the work horse in this film hardly used...sometimes for our wide!

60mm f/2.8 Macro NIkor

I love using this instead of the 50mm when I need the close Focus...this is the lens where we started on a Lighter flame full frame and dollied to a 2 shot!

85mm f/1.8 NIkor

Great lens, used lots on this shoot, often used with the Doubler 2x for a 170mm with the depth of field of a 1.8 but needing the lite of a 3.5!

90mm Macro f/2.5

used lots for CU... even through on the Macro +10 adapter on top of this to shoot Extreme CU...like a name on a cell phone filling frame... or 10 scan lines on a TV!

70-300mm Zoom f/4-5.6

used on the 2 day Ext scenes. used with the x2 for 600mm B-roll shots of the city... a really Slow zoom, I do need to invest in a faster one...

Lensbabies 3G with the wide .6 and telephoto 1.6 adapters

a great selective focus lens. this ones great Because you can "lock" the sweet spot and still rack it almost like a regular lens...

Looks great.

A bit offtopic but I was wondering what kind of lights you used for the second shot in de trailer of 'yesterday's tomorrow' with the lightbeams in that room on your myspace. That looks awesome man.

How much does the M2 cost?
I am looking at getting it to use with canon lenses.

So I want to know the final cost.

http://shopping.netsuite.com/redrockmicro

it's all on their website. I'm also considering buying one. So many great things are made with that thing.

Jeff Kilgroe February 22nd, 2007 01:54 PM

I just wanted to add my vote for a Lensbaby 3G. I bought one a bit over a month ago and it's worth every penny. So far I've only used it for still shots and I'm currently doing one stop-motion piece with a Nikon DSLR and the LB3G. ...No video just yet, but then again, I don't have my 35mm adapter anymore. I'm planning to be one of the first to try the LB3G with full 4K resolution on the RED One. But that won't be for a few more months.
