HVX audio question

I have a request from a director to record the main track on one channel and have a camera mounted mic (or even the on-camera mic) record to the other channel so he can leave notes to his editor. Is there a way to set one channel to manual control and the other to auto? I was just going to stick an ME64 on there. If someone could walk me through this I would appreciate it. I find the HVX manual really terrible regarding audio. :(

I don't know what you mean by "manual" vs. "auto". The channel recording is determined by the switch settings on the LH side. If you are recording in HD, 4 channels will be recorded if you have two external sources hooked up to the #1 and #2 (and these are selected). All four of these channels show up independently in the editor, so you can do what you want with them. You will have to ensure that any mics, external and internal can't hear the other to avoid spillover.

Pretty sure we'll be recording to miniDV, which is two channel. By "auto," I mean I want to use the auto gain on one channel (for the camera mounted mic) and set the gain manually on the other channel, which will be monitored by a mixer. There's no easy way to monitor the meter for the camera mounted mic, and it's not critical. This channel will be thrown away in the final mix, so spillover is not an issue.

Marco,

The HVX200 does not have AGC or auto gain control, only ALC auto-limit which prevents clipping. Refer to Barry's book and other posts on this forum for proper audio setups in the HVX.
