Anyone using the Sony NEX5 for video?

Ok, I own a bag of 5D2/7Ds... but my favorite camera for home video and fun shooting is my Canon S95. However, now I'm crazy for tiny form/big sensor, and have been looking at the NEX5 as a ultra portable option (ultra portable with a pancake lens anyway).

Does anyone here have one and use it for video shooting? Any love/hate thoughts on it? Especially on adapting non Alpha lenses?

Thanks!

There's a little discussion in the VG10 section, FWIW (really would be great to re-org the Sony forum sections to make for better landing spots rather than scattered discussions).

I haven't actually used the NEX5, but have the A55 SLT, so far I'm fairly impressed with the "auto" video quality, and I've got some decent old Minolta lenses that seem to work fairly well...

The NEX series was designed around video, so it should be better suited than the full size DSLR's, at least in theory - the "downside" is that you're pretty limited in the manual control department (speaking from the A55 and Sony's P&S cameras). BUT, if you can live with letting the camera take the lead, I find I'm getting good usable video so far...

Re: Anyone using the Sony NEX5 for video?

Dylan,

I bought a NEX 5 last August as a still camera in preparation for a trip to Central America. I was the head photographer on the trip, and the NEX was intended to take the place of my Nikons and Fuji's.

Once there, I found myself shooting as much or more video with the camera than stills. It has limited manual control in video mode, but I was so impressed with the quality of the video that I bought a VG-10 as soon as I got home. I use the Nex 5 as a B camera, and have shot 5 jobs in the last 4 months with it in that role, and two with it as a primary camera. It is an amazing little camera....I credit it with a significant surge in my interest in video again.
The 16mm kit lens is not the greatest for video use; the 18-55 is much more versatile, and the 18-200 just rocks. You can shoot that lens handheld and get near-steadicam results with that little body
