what is Redhead and bluehead lights?

I'm a little confused, whats the difference of the two?

To me, a Redhead is a DeSisti open face quartz fixture.

The term Bluehead is unknown to me, but I wonder if someone coined it to describe Arri, with their blue paint?

Redheads were originally made by Strand but have had many copies as does every popular fixture. Never heard of blue head...

The Redhead was first made by Ianiro, I gather Red being the only colour available for fibre glass at that time. Stand marketed them in various markets.

They also came up with the 2k Blonde - it's yellow.

And as Brian implies, but nobody's specifically stated, a RedHead is a 1k.

I've been on shoots where Redhead is used in a generic sense to refer to any bowl-like 1k open faced light.

I specify "bowl like" because I've never heard anybody refer to a Mickey as a RedHead, but just about any other 1k open face (no matter what the color) may sometimes be referred to as a Redhead even if, technically, it's not.

1k in 120 volt countries, 800 watt in 220-240 volt countries. You can also get 30 volt 250 watt bulbs for use as a battery light (or at least you used to, I haven't checked recently and usually the 650 watt type heads get used as battery lights).

It has become a generic term rather like Hoover, even the Arri version gets called a Redhead.

The Redhead is a versatile unit which can also take the small J type 78mm linear bulbs, these are very cheap too!

so you can go from 100w to 300w in 50w jumps in addition to the traditional 650,800,1000w sizes

linky

I believe you may be referring to Redheads and Blondes...

Here is a link that describes different lighting types:

hope this helps.

Those Desist "redheads" look just like the "real" Ianiro Redheads. I wonder if they got a new U.S. importer: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Open_Face.html

There are some Chinese "redheads" that you can immediately spot because they are much more red than orange. The "real" redheads are orange. Also, the Chinese version is 800 watts max.

ABC net used to issue a three light kit that consisted of 3 redheads. These were marketed by Strand. I too think they're the best open faced light out there. Very smooth and even light through out its range.

My kit is patched mostly from lights I use, but I did start with the 3 light redhead kit, I've picked up two more since that long time ago and use them regularly. I'm also using divas, moles and I'm looking into leds. Buy what you'll use. I'm not much of a kit guy.

I wouldn't trust the Chinese knock off red heads on ebay. These are HOT lights.

The Chinese knockoffs are more red than orange, that is your first clue they're not the "real" ones. Real redheads are orange, not red. The Chinese versions also are 800 watts maximum, while real Redheads are 1K. The ones I had back in the '80s were sold by Strand in the U.S. No more, apparently. This Desisti set at B&H LOOKS just like the real Redheads, but who knows for sure.

Sergiu Pavel April 27th, 2008 02:09 AM

The Chinese redhead is 800 watts max because is rated for European countries and here the standard for a redhead made by Ianiro or Desisti is 800 watts/220V. But the unit can also support a 1000W/110V bulb.

Maybe the bluehead's are the Arrilie from Arri which have a blue housing.

Personally I have in my arsenal some redheads made by Ianiro, Cosmolight and a Chinese version made by Cinelight Equipment and I have to say that this Chinese version have aprox the same output like those made by Cosmolight and Ianiro. The housing of Chinese light is made from metal, same as Cosmolight. Ianiro is made from fiberglass. The mechanism of the focus knob is same on all three lights, the differences is in the quality of the parts that reflects on smoothness in operation. The the leaf of barndoors of Cinelight lights are little bigger than others, but compatible in diameter with other.
Personally I find the quality of these lights pretty reasonable vs the paid price.
